Child Abuse Investigation In Nic Cage Arrest

4/25/2011 6:31 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

A child abuse detective was called in to investigate Nic Cage on the night of his drunken arrest -- after a witness told police he saw Cage pull his 5-year-old son to the ground during an alcohol-fueled argument with his wife ... this according to the New Orleans PD.

Nicolas Cage Child Abuse

According to the police report, Cage's wife Alice told police she and Nic had been arguing on the night of April 15 "due to his intoxicated state"  ... when they went to pick up their son from a friend's house.  FYI -- Alice was in the driver's seat.

Alice told cops ... she and Nic continued to argue until they arrived at their home -- at which point she claims, "Mr Cage fell while holding their son. The fall caused the 5 year old to suffer a minor abrasion to his left knee."

But a witness told cops a slightly different story -- saying he saw "Mr. Cage pull the male child to the ground by his hand."

According to the report, "A child abuse detective was notified."

Cops say they wanted to interview Cage's son -- but Alice wouldn't let that happen.

As for Cage, cops described him as "hysterical" and "irrational" when they interviewed him after the incident.

TMZ broke the story -- Cage was eventually arrested for domestic abuse and disturbing the peace after he allegedly grabbed his wife earlier in the evening.

Allegedly, Cage forced his son to watch his film 'The Wicker Man'. Detective Salamangus claims the incident caused life-long trauma to the five year old son, trauma which will haunt him for the rest of his miserable days.

Which ever story you go with it doesn't sound like he did anything on purpose, he either fell with the child or stumbled pulling the child to the ground... scraped knee doesn't exactly equal child abuse. And no the parent does not have to allow their 5yr old to be questioned by police, they can ask but that's it. Should he seek some rehab, maybe.. not sure, I really haven't heard much about him being in trouble with drinking, he's been working... sure he's got financial problems ... I guess we'll see.

sounds like he was just seriously wasted and fell down whilst holding his son's hand...pulled him down with him accidentally. the whole thing seems like an embarrassing drunken night that lots of people have had but don't get it broadcast for days on end in the tabloids :-P although...shouldn't have been with his son in that condition, nada.

His wife is displaying all the signs of a dominated, abused wife. Get rid of this loser.

Looks like TMZ is trying to destroy yet another person's career/life.

Bad parenting? Perhaps, probably yes. Abuse??? Hmmmm. I find it more abusive that Katie Holmes has her 4-year-old out in a NY restaurant at midnight for obvious photo-op stuff.

PLEASE, this is NOT CHILD ABUSE! signs he, cage, needs AA, yes, but not child abuse. I get SO TIRED WHEN PEOPLE JUST CALL CPS for STUPID THINGS taking these workers away from possible life threatening cases. Even if you think this is Child Abuse, they will NEVER TAKE THE CHILD AWAY FOR THIS!!! The wife, she is just probably AFRAID of what might happen, maybe the cps worker will put WORDS INTO THE 5 YOS MOUTH? Afraid that she will LOSE HER SON??? for a stupid reason??? again, not child abuse. MOVE ON, CAGE IS A DRUNK, BUT NOT AN ABUSER. yes, Alice should really think of leaving him, for at least a while until he dries up a bit, ONLY IF THE DRINKING IS TRUE. But again, mags/rags, YOU DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO TRUST. look at what TMZ ran on monday, AND OTHERS TOO- N. Cage returns to work Monday morning like nothing happened. (after being brought in for BEING DRUNK ON FRIDAY NIGHT!!!) Totally moronic, and the person who wrote that is a moron, hangovers, a day? who has a hangover that last from Saturday morning and STILL CAN'T GET UP MONDAY MORNING-unless they are in a COMA OR DEAD?

Why are the all of a sudden now coming out with him abusing his kid? Why not before when it first happend? I think they are blowing this whole thing waaay out or proportion!

@Heather--it's a parent's duty and right to protect their kids from the system. Nic's wife doesn't have to let her son talk to anyone.

@ this article: An abrasion? Are you kidding me? The sad thing is, greedy CPS will try to take her kid away from her when she did nothing wrong, because they know they can get money out of them (CPS gets paid every time they take kids, place kids, and adopt them out--they rely on taking kids for their income--then the county will try to "recover costs," or basically let them have their kids back after they've paid for the children's attorney, court costs, counseling, housing the kid once they kidnap him, etc). Be smart like Nic's wife--don't ever let the government near your kids. If you suspect your neighbors really are abusing their kids, stick your nose in and find out for yourself before calling about some bs scratch and ruining people's lives.
