Matthew Perry -- I'm 'Going Away' to Focus On Sobriety

5/12/2011 4:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Matthew Perry tells TMZ he's making plans to "go away for a month to focus on [his] sobriety" ... as a proactive measure in his battle with substance abuse.

Matthew Perry

The "Friends" star issued a statement to TMZ ... saying, "I’m making plans to go away for a month to focus on my sobriety and to continue my life in recovery. Please enjoy making fun of me on the world wide web.”

We're told Perry has not suffered any sort of relapse -- but has planned the trip as a proactive measure.

Perry has struggled with substance abuse in the past -- checking into rehab for a prescription pill addiction in 1997 and again in 2001.

His time would be better spent getting his neck lipo-ed.

Anonymous all up in his kool-aid. Too funny.

Well, maybe he was really, really scared that he might possibly conceivably use again so he checked himself into rehab. Wait, that just sounds stupid. Sounds like he's using.

You know, for the abysmal success rates and revolving rehab door, it's jsut amazing that any insurance company pays for it anymore. Just imagine if success rates for heart surgery were that bad, the doctors and hospitals would be sued into oblivion.

Rehab - the last bastion of quack medicine, just throwing free money to providers. Just watch 5 minutes of Non-Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Screw. Talk about getting nothing for something.

Mr. Perry; You know that it's an ongoing disease. With AA, it gets better even tho there's no cure. And thirty yrs from now, your mind will still try to convince you that you now have conquered your disease. Yes, there are those who relapse even after 30 yrs. And they die quickly, because their disease had been progressing even tho they stayed dry. They just stopped working the AA program, and their memories got old and tired.
That's why I salute you for your stand.
It's going to be a battle for the rest of your life. But, thanks be to your higher power, there are all kinds of tools to cope with it.
It's a cunning, baffling and powerful disease. If it cannot get you to drink alcohol, it will do everything to get you to take up a life-threatening habit, like smoking. And it will get you to this line of thinking: "Well, at least I'm not drinking!"

Good FOR him. Can he DO any better for himself?

I watched the episode of Friends where they made fun of him doing that earlier, but seriously, best of luck to him.

I start my day with TMZ

Way to go Matthew! Addiction is tough and I admire your willingness and responsibility to continue Life Recovery and work to be healthy.

(as for the world wide web: Anyone who tries to minimize your status or what you are doing simply needs to consider their own issues)

smart man being proactive
you probably can't turn in any direction in 'show biz' without seeing drinking/drug use to varying extents

Perry has come so far and done so much in the business and his personal life that reinforcing and recharging his commitment to sobriety is the best gift he can give to himself and his fans

and I proudly can say that I am a fan-he is truly a talented man and feel great that he is taking the time out to do this for himself...wishing him a long life as well as a long career

No SHAME BRO!!! To go away to work on your sobriety and health is very positive and inspirational... NO ONE is stupid enough now days to put someone down for bettering their life! Besides no one gossips and jumps for joy when someone is diagnoses with ANY other dis-ease and alcoholism/addiction IS A disease according to the world health organization. Best of luck... came to believe that a power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

bravo! now go take a statistics course. i passed. do something with your life friend before you all end up like sheen. used and abused by hollywood. eh charlie? its time to go into production by yourself. i know a produced show by sheen incorporated would produce! 3d sheen! after that horrid roadshow i know writers are rubbing their hands together with the potentialities of stories that could be done for a major hollywood production. now that sheen is shining solo maybe mr perry could use his mentorship skills and considerable talent to help produce a production worthy of paying the price of admission. perry's a leader in hollywood and his leadership is needed to make sure others in his position don't sink into the same pits as he climbed out. mr perry's ready for that next step and it ain't scientology!
