TMZ spoke with Jenni Weinman, a rep for the estate and Lara's family -- who tells us, "It is with unbearable sadness that I can confirm that Lara Long, the sister to DJ AM passed away late Monday night, May 9th after a fierce four month battle with an extremely rare colon cancer."

Weinman continues, "She was just two months shy of turning 41. Lara was responsible for keeping the memory of her brother alive with the creation of the DJ AM Memorial Fund. She was the driving force behind his eBay shoe sale as well as his record sales, working tirelessly to make sure he would not be forgotten.

"Lara was an amazing woman, with a huge personality, a heart of gold and an incredible laugh. There are no words to explain how she will be missed. We ask that you please respect the privacy of the family at this most devastating of times.”

I can't imagine what it must be like for their mom. The idea of losing my son is more than I can bear, but to lose two children in such a short period of time must be devastating. No matter how old they get, they are still your kids.

@mikey: That is a horrible thing to say. Pray people say nicer things about you (that will be tough if it's announced here)when it's your time.

What a horrible thing at so young an age. People aren't screened unless there's a family history at that age. If her parents are still alive, my thoughts are with you. I can't imaging losing one child, never mind two.

MIKEY,

YOU ARE ONE HORRIBLE PERSON..YOU LACK COMPASSION AND EMPATHY..WHEN THE BAD KARMA YOU PUT OUT, COMES BACK AT YOU, DONT BE SURPRISED. YOUR JUDGEMENTAL SELF IS OUTRAGEOUS. TAKE A LOOK IN THE MIRROR, AND WHAT YOU WILL SEE IS A PERSON THAT IS A MESS. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED...

OUR PRAYERS GO OUT TO THE FAMILY, AND PARENTS OF DJ AM AND THEIR DAUGHTER WHO HAVE LOST 2 BELOVED CHILDREN..OMG, THEIR IS NOTHING HARDER FOR PARENTS THAN LOSING A CHILD, AND NOW LOSING TWO...OUR BEST TO YOU THROUGH THIS MOURNING PROCESS, AND KNOWING THE LOSS WILL ALWAYS BE THERE...SO, SO SAD. BLESSINGS.

Sad for those parents and sibs (if any), very sad. Can we please 86 the word "battle" in reference to cancer, bulimia, depression, bipolar disorder, etc. etc.? Jeez. Medical treatment is not warfare. Yes, we want to "eliminate" the cancer, but "battle"? sooooo overused and silly.

lane,

why eliminate something that is very, very true...have you ever had to battle horrible cancer.

try asking someone who has had to battle devastating cancer. ask those that have been in the front lines being there with their loved one battling for years and years...fighting for every day, through every grueling treatment...then, sadly losing the battle...these are the unfortunate ones, that call it a battle.

it must be called that...people call it what it is.

If sense were common everyone would have it.

Another example of the twisted randomness of life. How people who don't deserve this kind of fate go far too soon, & others who embody evil go along their merry way, causing anguish & destruction before they're finally done.

Dana Reeves, too. Loved & cared for her husband throughout their entire marriage, including the most painful stretch. After he passes, she can start living a little more for herself again, & dies from lung cancer even though she didn't smoke.

Bad things happen to good people, & it is so random, but it's still twisted & there's no good answer for it as far as I'm concerned.

it is very sad, not only for her and her family but also to the hundreds of families who lose someone to cancer every single day. my little sister was found to have a brain tumor this past Fall, she died on 2.2.11. i was diagnosed with colon cancer myself and have been fighting it for several years now after having my colon removed. if only a portion of what we all spend on stupid things went towards finding a way to prevent cancers this battle would be won in no time, no more needless losses, no more, no more, no more! but unless it happens to us we all have this gut feeling it can't happen to us. if you luck out and it isn't you then it WILL happen to someone you care for. condolences to all.

They should change their last name to "Short" because a "Long" life is not the case.
