'Grease' Star Jeff Conaway -- Dead at 60

5/27/2011 11:13 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

"Grease" star Jeff Conaway has died today ... several weeks after he was found unconscious in his L.A. area home ... TMZ has confirmed with the actor's family.

Jeff Conaway Dead

Conaway -- a notorious substance abuser -- had reportedly fallen into a coma after suffering an overdose earlier this month ... and doctors were not able to revive him.

Jeff's inner struggles became public when he appeared on "Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew" in 2008 and admitted to being addicted to cocaine, alcohol and painkillers.

Conaway -- who played Kenickie during the 1978 film "Grease" -- was 60 years old.

TMZ was so busy asking us who we would rather - Maria or Patty - and showing us Kin Kardashian's ridiculous ring that they completely dropped the ball on this story. Not only did they only briefly touch on the fact that Jeff was critically ill, they were late in reporting his death and got their facts wrong about the real cause of it. TMZ, you're getting a bit like X17 and Perez.

RIP Jeff. You were tortured in life, may you be in peace in heaven.

RIP, sir. Now if we could only stop calling addiction a disease and find a better way to treat this behavior. Powerlessness, God cures and 12-step magic thinking may work for some, but it doesn't work for a majority. And saying "it works if you work it" is circular logic. Becoming a Mormon might get you sober, too, but that doesn't mean their story is true or logical. Again, until rehab in America grows up, a lot of people will just continue their downward spirals. Dr. Drew knows this treatment doesn't work for most addicts, but he continues to blame the "disease" (see behavior) instead of the system.

Even though I'm skeptical of whether or not Dr. Drew is actually a real doctor, it's still sad that Jeff died.
Predictable death unfortunately. RIP

Poor Jeff...his addiction finally took him out. I could tell when he was on the show that what Dr Drew was saying didn't mean sh*t to him. He was such a troubled soul. Well at least he's at peace now..RIP

@JOHN JOHNSON at least Dr. Drew gave him some sort of income at the end of his life, Hollywood didn't want him anymore...Blame is hoe she was sneaking drugs to him in rehab, she also tried to get to his hospital bed. Really, he was famous decades ago what did his addiction have to do with Dr Drew????? The man was severely disabled when he went to Dr. Drew!
