Andy Irons' Death -- Drugs Contributed

6/10/2011 10:57 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Andy Irons did die from heart disease -- as his family announced yesterday -- but methadone and cocaine also played a part in the surfing champion's death ... according to the official autopsy report.

Andy Irons Drugs

According to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's report, "The primary and underlying cause of death is ischemic heart disease due to coronary artery pathology."

The report lists the manner of death as, "Natural."

However, the report continues, "Drugs ... particularly, methadone and cocaine, are other significant conditions contributing to death but not resulting in the underlying cause."

The report also says a small amount of Xanax was in Andy's body -- and bottles of Xanax and Ambien were found in the Dallas hotel room where he died.

In its response to the autopsy report ... Andy's family acknowledged he was prescribed Xanax and Ambien to treat anxiety and occasional insomnia – a result of a bipolar disorder diagnosed by his family doctor at age 18.

"The family  believes Andy was in some denial about the severity of his chemical imbalance ... choosing to self-medicate with recreational drugs."

Some of you people are ridiculous. Speculating on the cause of death and the Irons family from a blurb on TMZ. Read more before judging.

1 of 2 independent forensic experts say drugs "did not contribute to the death". Andy had a heart condition, the drugs clearly didn't help, but also don't seem to be the root cause of death.

The family acknowledges Andy had a drug problem and tried to intervene several times. Don't spit on the memory o*****reat but troubled young man. Give his memory and his family some respect.

Oh....Lala, you're clearly an awful person. You probably just need to get laid.

A World Surfing Champion has made a statement with his death. Sick, alone, on drugs, in a room at the airport just trying to get back home.

Andy was a great surfer and in no way a spolied junkie. So if you know nothing about him or his life dont make up things. If he wasnt famous and died the same way the majority would feel sorry for his family. In no way are we perfect and shouldnt judge anyone until we have walked in their shoes. Show some respect for his family, young kids and friends.

@tmzdon'tsurf Thank-you! While I believe TMZ puts a wee bit more effort into their stories and tries to make sure that they are accurate... I never only read the TMZ article for facts.

@lala What??? Nothing is more addictive and dangerous then Methadone??? Dr.'s do not often prescribe medications that would be abused????
Are you blind????? There is a frigging epidemic of Dr's handing out too many prescriptions. While Methadone and coc is a bad combo, Andy was struggling and trying to get clean again. Methadone is a proven aid in rehab.

I really wish people that don't know what they are talking about, would refrain from commenting and upsetting the family.
Also those that are ticked at the family for not "owning" his drug addiction.... Freaking BREATH!!!! They just lost a family member, give them time for f's sake!

Let's see Methadone, Cocaine, Xanax & Ambien. All unprescribed. And the family wants his death certificate to say natural causes to collect life insurance.
