Ricki Lake Sued -- You Burned Down My Beach House!

6/11/2011 5:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

What does Ricki Lake have in common with the Exxon Valdez? Each is responsible for a super-destructive, wildly expensive oil spill ... allegedly.

Ricki Lake Lawsuit

Lake is being sued for allegedly making a HUGE mistake with some flammable heating oil ... and causing the fire that burned down the Malibu beach house she was renting back in 2010.

According to the lawsuit filed by the owner of the home ...  Lake was refilling a portable space heater when she spilled the oil on the hot heating coils -- and the oil burst into flames. The fire quickly ripped through the entire property.
Ricki Lake
In the lawsuit, filed Monday in L.A. County Superior Court, the owner, Hovsep Kousouyan, claims Lake spoke with emergency personnel who responded to the fire -- and she admitted the whole thing was her fault.

Kousouyan says his beach house was completely destroyed in the blaze -- and wants Lake to pay for all of the damages ... which could be in the millions.

Calls to Lake's rep have not been returned.

To echo everyone else... no insurance?

The moral here is (besides the need to buy some damned insurance)is to never rent to Ricki Lake 'cause apparently she's an idiot.

Ouch, she's gonna feel the pain now.

And what's the difference, people? The owner sues her or the insurance company sues her? She's still gonna be sued!

WHY WOULD ANYONE, ESPECIALLY THE OWNER!!!

PURCHASE, USE AND STORE A SPACE HEATER ON THEIR PROPERTY AS THE ONLY SOURCE FOR HEAT FOR HIS/HER PROPERTY???????

DID THE PROPERTY OWNER KNOW THAT SPACE HEATERS ARE DANGEROUS AND CAN START A FIRE????????

Lake was renting it was her fault. She has to be the one who has renters insurance. He is right.

The house didn't have heat? Lake get your wallet out. I don't know of any landlord (I've been one) who ever allows flammable liquids of any kind that's always in a lease. Protection of landlord and tenent and property.

@Janet, FYI...Renters insurance only covers the physical property inside the residence that the RENTER owns. That being said, the homeowners insurance, if they had any, should cover the cost of the house, of course that is if they had full replacement insurance and had the cost of the house actually valued correctly.

Second, why was Riki using a space heater, did the house not have central heat? Crazzzzzyyyy!!!

**** is was an OLD tear down, with no other heat. guy should have insurance and use it!! no insurance company would most likely insure the dump.

the place was a fing dump look at it, one of those old 1945 surfer homes. no plumbing, no heat no windows, the guy got what he was asking for by not fixing it up!! must have been all of 600 sq feet.

don't pay a dime Ricki.

People. Renters insurance only covers what you have in the house/apartment. It dosen't cover the house/apartment. That nut should, if he didn't, have his own insurance. you cannot put two policies on the same property.

@ Hovsep Kousouyan....In America it's called homeowners insurance! Not sue your celebrity renter to rake in the big bucks!
