Massive Riot Erupts in Vancouver After Stanley Cup

6/16/2011 5:36 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Things got downright violent in Vancouver last night -- when angry fans RIOTED IN THE STREETS after the Vancouver Canucks lost the Stanley Cup to the Boston Bruins in a 4-0 asskicking.

Cars were flipped and burned, windows smashed and stores were looted by drunk/angry hockey fans as police armed with pepper spray, tear gas and flash-bang grenades rushed to break it up.

Local law enforcement tells TMZ ... the situation is finally under control.

These people were NOT fans. Fans went home to drown their sorrows. Opportunistic bastards started rioting. Sore losers - not really. We are proud of our team for making it this far.

I live in downtown Vancouver and trust me, the majority of the teenagers/coke heads doing this are from the suburbs and do not reflect the citizens of Vancouver in any way. What an embarrasment to every resident living in this city.

THIS had NOTHING to do with the hockey game! It had everything to do with criminal minded youth who pre-planned this riot, even bringing in the vehicles to overturn and burn! This is not a reflection of the true Canadian and true Canadian hockey fan! This is what happens when you put kids in the naughty corner instead of spanking them!

Wow - excuses, excuses, excuses. Blame America - try and spin it this way and that. "Those aren't fans" Blah, blah, blah.
Get a reality check Canada. You LOST and your FANS acted like five year olds destroying your OWN city. Kudos to the five or so posters that acknowledge it and express their own disgust at their OWN countrymen. If you recall, Vancouver fans did the exact same thing the LAST time they LOST. What was the excuse then? It's just sad that the true/good fans of Vancouver had to be brought down with them. Stop with all the excuses - you can cry foul all you want - but the Cup is gonna stay in BOSTON, USA.

Alas, such idiocy in Vancouver also brings out the idiots who comment at TMZ. Why not? Let's judge a whole country by the actions of a few. On that note, this must mean all Americans like to bomb small children because their government does this... ridiculous.

These morons in Vancouver would have done the same thing if Vancouver had won, so it's not a case of 'sore losers', it's a case of 'drunken morons'.

it only take a bunch of idiots to cause damage nothing better to do hope they get caught and have to pay for the damages they caused to the hard working people who had nothing to do with the game or the loss, its a frigging game people and for those who seem to put Canadians down it is not becoming of you we are polite caring people no matter what you think. Proud to be CANADIAN ,so eat that.

The events of last night in Vancouver was not caused by Canuck/hockey fans or Proud Canadians.. the events were cause by trouble makers that went into the downtown core with that intention.

Vancouver, BC should be known for something else like the fans in Rogers Arena that cheered for the Canucks on a well played post season or that we are Proud of our City. Most of us were ashamed by the black mark the event have given us.

According to friends in Vancouver, the City of Vancouver had designated Fan Zones with giant TVs in the downtown core for the 2 games where the Canucks played in Boston and for the final game.

After the 2 games the Canucks played in Boston where they lost, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in the Fan Zones to watch went home peacefully.

What hapened last night is not a reflection of the fans or the Canadian people, but a small number of criminals with a plan. These are criminals NOT fans.

Vancouver is one of the most beautiful city on the planet and Vancouverites are friendly, respectful people.

This had nothing to do with the result of the game. It has everything to do with mob mentality and how a small number of people can incite hundreds into actions they would never do on their own. City Council has to take responsibility for encouraging over 100,000 to gather in a small area and not allow enough police presence from the start. It won't be a surprise to those of us who live in Vancouver to see that it will be the same idiots who incited this, the Olympic protests and the homeless protests. Many are "rent a crowds" who don't even live here.
