Roger Ebert: 'I Was Probably Too Quick to Tweet'

6/21/2011 8:45 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Roger Ebert says he "was probably too quick to tweet" about the car crash that killed "Jackass" star Ryan Dunn yesterday ... explaining that his post was "not intended as cruel."

Ebert just blogged about the situation on his website -- saying, "To begin with, I offer my sympathy to Ryan Dunn's family and friends, and to those of Zachary Hartwell, who also died in the crash. I mean that sincerely. It is tragic to lose a loved one."

Ebert continues, "I also regret that my tweet about the event was considered cruel. It was not intended as cruel. It was intended as true."

Ebert explains that he wrote the tweet based on preliminary reports and admits, "I have no way of knowing if Ryan Dunn was drunk at the time of his death."

"I don't know what happened in this case, and I was probably too quick to tweet. That was unseemly."

Ebert, however, staunchly defends the message in his tweet -- that people should NOT drink and drive -- saying, "I do know that nobody has any business driving on a public highway at 110 mph, as some estimated -- or fast enough, anyway, to leave a highway and fly through 40 yards of trees before crashing."

"That is especially true if the driver has had three shots and three beers. Two people were killed. What if the car had crashed into another car?"

As we previously reported, Dunn's friend Bam Margera WENT OFF on Ebert last night -- telling the movie critic to shut his "f**king mouth" about Dunn's crash.

BOATS and HO'S, Roger Ebert's disfigurement is because of CANCER. he did not choose to get cancer, and what difference does it make anyway what a person looks like. Dunn was a jackass and there is no way to sugar coat an act of stupidity like that! Grow up!

I don't think he needed to apologize, I didn't find it offensive at all. Dunn is in movies called "Jackass" where everyone in the movie is refered to as a Jackass........."Friends don't let Jackasses drink and drive" wasn't a put down on dunn, it was a put down on the people who let him get behind a wheel drunk. That's who Bam should be trashing.

I understand all of his friends and fans are saddened by his death but honestly when you put yourself in the public eye you open you life to others opinions. Everyone keeps bashing Ebert for his post. His comment was his opinion. Freedom of speech. Dunn was a complete dumbass for getting behind the wheel after he was drinking. Do you really think his friends are going to tell the police or reporters the truth of how much the guy had to drink. Worse part about all this is he took another person's life in the process of being an idiot. I feel for his family not because of their loss of him but because they will lose everything they have left of him after the other guys family sues his estate for wrongful death. If he was such a good person he would not have put his family in that situation over a few drinks.

I support Bam in this. I would of done the same thing if this happened to my friend, no matter the cir****tances. If it's true that Dunn was drunk, it was a stupid decision to get behind the wheel on his part, and it shows people what happens when they drink and drive, but Roger commented way too soon. It struck Bam hard, and that was his best friend, so of course he was going to defend him and be outraged by such a statement. If it happened to an average person they would be too. I thought especially Roger should of stated it so much differently since hes a classy man, instead he brought a lot of hurt to people.

People have always made tasteless jokes after people die.
Does this mean Roger and those who have tweeted too quickly about peoples deaths recently have to go on a public announcement service tour. Someone died wait don't tweet so quickly, please think before you tweet.

i would imagine that perez hilton and those who are slamming mr ebert have never picked up a small child off of the side of the road who is dead because he was killed by a drunk mother. or a family of four that had their mini van over turned because of the drunk driver that killed them and fled the scene.well i have. i imagine you have not had an innocent loved one killed by a drunk driver..until then.. stfu! lets not forget another family also has to suffer because of the driver's choice. i understand fans are in pain. but there will be more to come if pple dont wise up. it needed to be said. thank you mr. ebert

man, when will anyone learn.....have a (l) drink and dinner out and a bar, ok....want to get drunk with your friends and party out at a bar then designate a driver, the concept has been around for a while now, along with seat belts....you want to just drink and do shots...stay the f home and out of cars and/or public....

Typical of Bam and others to deflect from the true tragedy: this idiots decision to get behind the wheel killed him and his friend. While some think it may be too soon, what Roger said was not meanspirited at all. You ARE a jacka$$ if you drink even 1 drink and drive. Regardless of whether "everyone has done it", the fact of the matter is all it takes is not paying attention, driving too fast and overall driving reckless to cause this truly preventable action. But of course Bam will act out in anger and lash out at Roger, a man who has more class and integrity in his pinkie finger than Bam will ever have in his entire life, because its always easier to blame others rather than admit the culpability of your friend. Grow up Bam and realize that your friend was wrong and the best thing you and your other buddies can do is get the word out about driving drunk. Other wise you look like a typical loser who lets friends be jaska$$es.

LoL@Celebs and politicians Facebooking, Tweeting, doing interviews, etc.. They are doing themselves in. We know this fool was trashed and drove, Weiner was sending naked pics of himself to young ladies, Tom Cruise is a maniac, Charlie Sheen is a crackhead who dates porn stars, Lindsey Lohan is a crack whore thief, Paris is a coke whore, and on and on. Fans used to look up to celebs now we just laugh at them and realize they are NO better than the rest of us. Most of them arent even educated, they just got lucky or knew someone and have a little more pocket change than you. (that they will 95% of the time blow by the time their 50).

With the technology today, maybe people should stop & think before posting tweets & facebook comments. Mr. Ebert is entitled to his opinion (everyone has one). Ryan made a huge mistake that cost him & his friend their lives. They have families & friends grieving!!

I think before people post tweets, facebook comments, etc...they should stop & think, "Is this something I would say in front of that person (or their family members)". People are just too quick to want to tell the world what they think.

It is a horrible tragedy!!!

My thoughts & prayers go out to his family & friends.

Of course family and friends are in grieve. It's always sad to lose a loved one, especially in for something that was completely preventable.

The reason Bam and his idiot following are so angry at Roger is because the truth hurts. They should direct that anger at themselves for tolerating drinking and driving.

But I don't expect accountability from a stupid moron who made a living from doing dumb shyte that is largely reckless and potentially deadly.

It's fascinating how people will write that Roger Ebert should have been more respectful and then go on to make fun of Mr. Ebert's health problems. Your true colors are showing.
