NFL Sued for Allegedly Concealing Brain Injury Risks

7/20/2011 4:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Seventy-five former professional football players are suing the NFL, claiming it intentionally concealed the harmful effects of game-related concussions for NINETY YEARS.

According to the lawsuit, filed today in L.A. County Superior Court and obtained by TMZ, the players and their wives claim, "The NFL knew as early as the 1920's of the harmful effects on a player's brain of concussions; however, until June of 2010 they concealed these facts from coaches, trainers, players and the public."

Among the 75 players -- Mark Duper, a former wide receiver for the Dolphins, as well as Ottis Anderson and Rodney Hampton, both former running backs for the Giants.

The suit claims the NFL commissioned a study in 1994, titled "NFL Committee on MIld Traumatic Brain Injury" and published a report in 2004, concluding there was "no evidence of worsening injury or chronic cumulative effects" from multiple concussions.

And, the suit alleges, it was not until June, 2010, that the NFL acknowledged concussions can lead to dementia, memory loss, CTE and related symptoms. All of the players are claiming they suffered injuries as a result of multiple concussions.

In addition to suing the NFL for fraud, negligence and failure to warn ... Riddell -- the manufacturer of NFL helmets -- is also a defendant.

The suit seeks unspecified damages.

A guy plays for 2 years and then expects a pension and medical care for the rest of their life? Does that mean that I can get a job, work 2 years and get a pension? Overpaid crybabies. They should have spent their money more wisely. Screw them and the NFL.

The players and their wives are kidding themselves. Those players wouldn't have retired early! Even the NFL players playing now are dismissing the permanent effects of concussions. This is a frivolous lawsuit. They knew the risks and accepted them to be paid hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars per year to play football for a living.

Its about time they got back some of that money, they deserve it. This is just another example of the ignorant being used to make the smart man rich while they collect the crumbs. The truth was deliberately held from them for a long time so every one can get rich while they resign themselves to a life of brain and head problems

Even ONE bad hit is enough. Three years ago when my daughter was a Senior in High School one of her closest friends collapsed on the field as the result of ignoring symptoms of previous trauma. It took one hit to put him in ICU for months with a very poor prognosis. The doctors are amazed he has survived......which is all he is doing today.....a once vibrant, outgoing and loving boy merely existing and completely dependent upon others for his survival. Makes me want to cry remembering him with a huge divit in his head where they had to remove part of his skull for many months to relieve the pressure on his brain. So very, very sad

Last time I checked, Football was a contact sport. When these guys signed those million dollar contracts they KNEW there was risk of injury seeing as it is a CONTACT SPORT.

Clearly, these people are just trying to get their hands on some free money. I'm sure the millions they were paid when they played just wasn't enough....
