NFL Sued for Allegedly Concealing Brain Injury Risks

7/20/2011 4:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Seventy-five former professional football players are suing the NFL, claiming it intentionally concealed the harmful effects of game-related concussions for NINETY YEARS.

According to the lawsuit, filed today in L.A. County Superior Court and obtained by TMZ, the players and their wives claim, "The NFL knew as early as the 1920's of the harmful effects on a player's brain of concussions; however, until June of 2010 they concealed these facts from coaches, trainers, players and the public."

Among the 75 players -- Mark Duper, a former wide receiver for the Dolphins, as well as Ottis Anderson and Rodney Hampton, both former running backs for the Giants.

The suit claims the NFL commissioned a study in 1994, titled "NFL Committee on MIld Traumatic Brain Injury" and published a report in 2004, concluding there was "no evidence of worsening injury or chronic cumulative effects" from multiple concussions.

And, the suit alleges, it was not until June, 2010, that the NFL acknowledged concussions can lead to dementia, memory loss, CTE and related symptoms. All of the players are claiming they suffered injuries as a result of multiple concussions.

In addition to suing the NFL for fraud, negligence and failure to warn ... Riddell -- the manufacturer of NFL helmets -- is also a defendant.

The suit seeks unspecified damages.

oh one more thing speaking of brains....WHERE ARE ALL YOUR BRAINS?? ..all of the needs of these players WILL be addressed and taken care of one way or another

1) get the nfl to create a fund to address these issues

2) access the medicaid system thus sending you ( the taxpayer ) the bill

as of now they are lining up daily draining millions out of the government medicaid system EVERY DAY!!!! ........and the owners are running out the back door with the cash........literally hundreds of millions leaving the tax payers with the bill.......... i see it everyday ...guess what state they are accessing said funds?? where else california ...since all players play at some point in california then its a slam dunk work related injury in california.....hope you all enjoy paying the bill...and believe me its huge with 9 zeros on it...so do the math einstein

People should really read this lawsuit more closely before jumping to conclusions. This suit is being brought by players who played ball years and years ago, long before it was common knowledge that repeated concussions can cause brain damage and LONG before players made millions of dollars for playing. Most of these guys played in the 60s and 70s, and you'd be surprised what they made for a salary. Don't dismiss this just because you assume these older players made millions of dollars like today's players do.

yeah, you probably gotta be real dumb to watch or see a football game, and then need an expert to issue a warning, that engaging in that sport or activity can be harmful. to me, when i watch football on television, i'm not like: "oh. i think they are playing with barbie dolls down there. let me join them...." dumases.

I look at some of the remarks on the players suing over head injuries and laugh. Most of these remarks come from people who were not born in the 60's. So I ask what they knew of the playing conditions?

Poor playing surfaces, 50.00 exhibition game pay checks. Illegal dispensing of steroids, medical care that was less then professional...dings not concusses...use your head and helmet as a weapon...get the facts...players were making less then 10 K a year in that day. Ask for a raise and get traded...helmets with poor web design..most guys were from poor families and the game gave them an education and start in life. Drew Brees is wrong about all being drunks and making poor decisions...maybe some but a lot of good guys and stories.

Has anyone published the complete list of the 75 players who filed this lawsuit? Every article I see only gives 2 or 3 names.
