Five Dead After Stage

Collapses At Sugarland

Show in Indiana

8/13/2011 6:45 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Five people are dead and 40 more injured after a stage collapsed tonight at the Indiana State Fair before the country band Sugarland was to perform.

High winds were believed to have been the cause.

A reporter for WANE-TV in Indiana was in the crowd at the time and described what happened like this: "The wind just picked up and the stage just caught and the roof just caught and it went up like a sail and then it crashed forward into the people standing in the front. There were people trapped underneath and everyone was running and screaming. They were asking any medics or nurses not to leave."

The stage that collapsed at the Cheap Trick concert in Ottawa in July was built by Mega-Stage, a company owned by Groupe Berger.

The death count is up to 5. Four died on the scene last night and another at about 5am this morning. On Indianapolis news this morning, they showed that this gust of wind that came through was about 12 miles ahead of the actual storm and gusted to between 60-70mph. The injured count is up to about 45. The fair is closed today and should reopen tomorrow. So far, no word on whether or not the other scheduled concerts will go on.

One of the people killed was Christina Santiago from Chicago.... I think she was 2003 Playmate of the Year. Man, I hope that I am wrong.

WOW the video is just horrifying. My thoughts go out to the families that lost loved ones. After watching that I can't believe more people weren't killed. Very sad.

Hey TMZ:

This is NOT an entertainment story, it is a tragedy at a local fair. Your headline is very misleading, Stick to talking about fluff celebrities if you can't present accurate reporting!
