Jewish Orgs. to Warner Bros.

BOOT Mel Gibson

from Maccabee Movie

9/9/2011 9:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Two powerful Jewish organizations are lashing out against the decision to hire Mel Gibson to produce a movie about biblical Jewish hero Judah Maccabee ... TMZ has learned.

The Anti-Defamation League has released a statement -- demanding Warner Bros. pull Gibson off the flick immediately ... saying, "As a hero of the Jewish people and a universal hero in the struggle for religious liberty, Judah Maccabee deserves better."

The statement adds, "It would be a travesty to have the story of the Maccabees told by one who has no respect and sensitivity for other people’s religious views."

TMZ also spoke with Rabbi Marvin Hier -- founder and Dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center -- who tells us putting Mel Gibson work on a movie about a Jewish hero is "like having a white supremacist portray Martin Luther King Jr."

FYI -- Judah is a central figure in the story of Hanukkah ... as the brave warrior who drove enemies of Judaism out of Jerusalem.

I think TMZ posters are getting smarter by the day!

Some great posts here about building bridges instead of burning them, and about how organized team-style religions divide our collective consciousness and drive us apart over imaginary semantics.

Make no mistake, this announcement is a somewhat lazy, overly-powerful and elitist way to try and say 'sorry' to a people whom you have attacked in a vile moment of stupidity and intoxication. Mel obviously has some issues with humility, thus his lack of genuine olive branches to the Jewish people preceding the announcement of his role with this production; whose subject matter is close to the heart of the Jewish and their history.

Moral of the story? Mel is a gruff old silverback, stubborn and jilted by his life in the Hollywood shark tank. Holding on to his glory and power harnessed and built through his youth.

But I honestly think that to (attempt to) bring artistic integrity to this film, and to do right by the people he has offended in portraying their hero Maccabee through his artistic medium, is Gibson's best attempt at making reparations and saying he is sorry for past transgressions.

The man just will not beg forgiveness. And I must say, neither would I. We all make mistakes. Those who hold onto those mistakes and hold them as shining examples of the person we are, are themselves the most destructive and miserable among us.

I agree that "Beaver" movie was ridiculous from the previews I saw. That was Jodie Foster's creation and I don't think anyone could have made that work.

Gibson and Warner Bros. had to know going into this that there was going to be an uproar and a lot of free publicity and interest in a movie that interest in the subject matter would be extremely limited otherwise.

A movie about Judah Maccabee would be a great epic -- 300, Braveheart, Patriot, Passion, etc.

The only thing I would really want is lots and lots of the Handel oratorio in the soundtrack.

Tee hee

WOW, The ADL is in the hater role here. Mel Gibson playing Judah Maccabee is no different than a black man playing Heimdahl.

How absurd - Mel Gibson is greatly talented and the perfect person to help tell the story of Judah Maccabee in film. Mel's previous work with Braveheart, The Passion of the Christ, and Apocalypto prove him to the best man for the job.

Mel is not an anti-Semite - he said a few mean drunken words - he apologized. Barack Obama attended a church for years with a true anti-Semite at its helm - a man Barack referred to as his 'spiritual guide' - and yet polls show that American Jewish people voted overwhelmingly for him.

I happen to be Jewish and I believe in meritocracy. I love Mel Gibson's work - nobody is better suited to the tell story - he is the best man for the job.

Oh Please. Just get over it already. So far all that has been announced is that he is producing and may direct. So what?

People need to save all their righteous indignation for something more palpable than a few words from someone who was drunk.

I do think Mel's acting career is over, but he will still be able to direct and produce. If Woody Allen and Roman Polanski can go on and make movies, so can he.

Be a little inappropriate~

That is the most accurate description.

Ummm... Mel, you want me to believe that Judah Maccabee, "Judah the Sledgehammer", the toughest badass warrior in Jewish history, looked like a 55-year-old, hard-livin', balding alcoholic with man boobs and a beer gut? Really?
