Don Lapre's Mom

Jail Officials Took His Meds Away

10/4/2011 12:30 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Don Lapre
The mother of TV pitchman Don Lapre, who committed suicide in jail Sunday, tells TMZ she blames jail officials for taking his anti-depressants away ... and also blames the FBI and U.S. Attorney General for her son's suicide.

Shirley Cleveland tells us ... her son was being treated for severe depression, just before he was jailed for 41 counts of conspiracy and fraud, in connection with his product -- The Greatest Vitamin in the World.

In fact, Shirley says Don had attempted suicide in the past.  She says when she learned jail officials took his meds away she called his lawyer and begged for her to intervene.  Shirley says the jail gave him another medicine, but it did not treat his depression.

And, Shirley insists, her son was innocent of all charges.

The U.S. Marshals tell us they do not comment on medical history.

Shirley (don d bag's mom) has been enjoying his profits since he probably had her on the pay roll. There's no way she didn't know he was scamming people but she loved to spend the poor innocent souls money. Now, do you feel bad for her or Don Hitler? Hitler was a common thief as well and died like a bleeding coward the way Don did. Yeah, there's a cozy furnace in hell where this d bag will live in eternity. As for his victims, now they have closure.

Let's just say he's guilty of all charges. Let's also say he was a threat society or flight risk, and therefore denied bail. Let's also say his medication was revised by qualified medical staff. Don was in Federal custody and therefore they were responsible for his safety.

As for the charges, maybe true, maybe not. But someone or group was not happy about what he was saying or selling.

He tried to kill himself after the bench warrant was issued, when he was living in the gym for a couple of days, and he had his meds then. She just wants to sue someone for money. Not surprising, since she raised a criminal.

Here we go again with the overprotective moms who see nothing wrong in their kids no matter what the evidences are. He was a criminal who was depressed because he got caught and was about to face prison for a looong time. At least he won't cost taxpayers even more money than he already cost us.

Um, maybe the dumb bitch should be blaming HER SON for scamming a whole bunch of innocent people. If he was depressed he deserved to be.

I worked for this guy in the late 90's. The 900 lines he sold did generate money for some people, i.e. a psychic line. If Don would have stopped there, it would be legit. But all the internet stuff is what was a scam. He got too greedy.

Who cares why this dirt bag died? The important thing is that he's dead and the world is a better place.

I will tell you who cared. His wife, his two children and the countless people he helped over the years. Maybe you should know the man before you comment.

I remember this scam artist from those late night infomercials. He claimed by putting tiny little ads in mags and papers that you could make MILLIONS like he did? And there you see him laying on some tropical beach listing off what he now owned as a result. All you had to do to be as rich as him was to buy his "kit" for $39.95 and you were well on your way to being a millionaire and all this was a pile of crap! Many people fell for that scam but by the time they realized they were ripped off he was on his way to the bank laughing all the way!! And then he goes on to pull the vitamin scam and this was his final downfall and he deserves to be where he was. As for refusing to give him his meds, I doubt that, jails are equipped to handle people with medical issues and I am wondering what he was on, if it is one you can get high on or kill yourself, chances are you are getting that. Mama is just trying to play the blame game, she sure don't want to admit to herself or anyone else that her son put himself in jail, OH Hell no, she will SUE SUE SUE the jail! I would imagine there is no money left so people can recoup it, so I guess they have to settle with him being DEAD. Does not bother me a bit.

For Sooth?

You have to fight like the ****ens, I mean really aggressively fight the jail system in order to keep supplying meds, that are prescribed by personal physicians, to anyone incarcerated. Usually the inmates have to go through withdrawal with not a lot of help from the inside ,and often times the situation is just so much worse because of the fact that they are already stressed from the whole jail situation and lack of ongoing communication from the outside support system, be it familial, or medical, or both. You honestly have to tell them that if your loved one commits suicide while incarcerated because they refuse to supply their meds that it is on their head. If the jail has a history of suicides while being in their system then, unfortunately, you have a lot more leverage for getting meds to inmates but it will probably be in their slow as molasses time frame. It is a system that is rife with failure and often times that may result in the death of your loved one.

I understand that she's his mother but she must be blinded to not see how her son scammed his way into people's pockets. Stupid people who fell for it but still he was a con artist scammer

Shady businessman or not, this is still very tragic. This man had a family- children who will never get to see their father again. If they really did take away his meds, that's very disturbing.
