Montel Williams

Reinstating DRAFT Could

Stop Bad Military Behavior

1/12/2012 10:32 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Former talk show host Montel Williams tells TMZ ... "making" U.S. citizens join the military could help PREVENT soldiers from acting like the "bad apples" featured in the urination footage.

Williams -- a retired Naval officer who started with the U.S. Marines -- hooked up with us via satellite this morning and explained that our soldiers in the field, including the guys in the footage, are likely stressed out from carrying such a heavy workload.

"The stresses must be getting to the point that it caused some of this ... why don't we spread out that stress and start making more people put on the uniform and defend this democracy?"

Williams claims only .25% of the U.S. population is serving in the military ... and says, "Maybe it's about time that this country wake up and understand that we can't put the pressure of defending our democracy on less than .25% of this entire population."

Many young people enlist out of a sense of duty to their country. They are both intelligent and educated not to mention highly trained. Many persons commenting on this story have no idea what it is like to serve in the military. While I do not condone the behavior depicted in the video, I do understand it.

I've no way of knowing what kind of Marines these men have been. They could be good, average, or **** bags. I do "know" their time in the Marine Corps will come to a grinding halt. I also know they are not representative of our current military.

There is tremendous stress in the military, particularly when deployed to a war zone. If you question that FACT, check out your nearest VA Hospital. Heck, just go to your local VFW Fish Fry. It takes years for our returning veterans to fit back into civilian life. Even if they are employed, they are forever changed.

As for the draft, I do strongly believe the USA should institute some sort of service. Military service would be one option. I don't want some chicken **** draftee having my kid's back.

Yea sure, makes a lot of sense..... send more of our soldiers there who don't want to be there and their behavior should improve? Montel, you are losing it!!

What are we going to pay them with? We're supposed to be CUTTING BACK on spending. Putting significantly more people in uniform, particularly when they aren't there voluntarily, will seriously stress an already stressed budget, not to mention the fact that people who are there by force aren't likely to be better behaved than volunteers.

That's asking alot of citizens who think slapping a magnet on the back of an SUV is supporting our troops.

Our guys were shipped off to fight in simultaneous wars. The rich got tax breaks--everybody else was asked to sacrifice.

There are plenty of countries that have a mandatory service requirement for people aged 18-30. It's actually not a terrible idea; you would always have plenty of reserve troops ready for national emergencies, defense postures, etc. Plus, there are a *lot* of people that need some structure in their lives so the experience would benefit them in the long run. And lastly, in South Korea where they have the mandatory service requirement, it's only two years. You would be surprised how much South Koreans actually support it.

As someone who's husband is deployed for the 3rd time i definitely would appreciate if more people would shoulder that burden. At the same time i know that it just isn't feasible to bring back the draft. Suddenly you would have a "crowd" that needs to be controlled.

You reap the rewards of this country and you should also have to serve for it as well. If not, deportation or domestic labor that benefits us all (community service). The me generation needs to learn a little more about giving. We all love to say we love JFK, "ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country" We all want to claim "American" but people balk at the notion of having to chip on to keep this boat afloat.

What about Jerry Springer, what do he and Sally-Jesse think???

Montel's answer is to further erode the freedoms of American citizens and increase military presence overseas to 'protect democracy' in America?

And that pesky debt ceiling that is slowly crushing the life out of the avg. American...I wonder what Monty's answer would be there...

The avg. American citizen reading this cannot possible take these moronic statements seriously???

Wow.

Yeah, and who's gonna foot the bill?? last time I checked, the Barry Soetero, AKA Barack Yo-mama administration, cut more spending to the military.
As usual, education and defense gets the ax. How about getting all of the schluffs on public assistance to start paying off the bill for once. Put THEIR asses in the military!!
