NHL Star Taylor Hall

GNARLIEST Hockey Injury Ever

Revealed in Photo

1/19/2012 3:05 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Taylor Hall head scarNHL superstar Taylor Hall is lucky to be alive after an ice skate ripped his skull open -- and his team just tweeted the first photo of the nasty ... NASTY aftermath.

The Edmonton Oilers star forward suffered a Frankenstein-like gash Tuesday night when he fell during warmups, and collided with a teammate who couldn't avoid slamming his skate on Hall's head. He needed 30 stitches to stop the bleeding!

Hall -- who's been out of the lineup since the injury -- was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. NHL players are required to wear helmets during games, but not warmups.

The Oilers are now advising their players to wear helmets -- while other teams are making it mandatory.

That's going to leave a heck of a scar. I know Hall wants to come back right away but I think he should take it easy and let this thing heal a bit. There is no point rushing our young star player when we the Oilers are going to be a last place team again. Fail for Nail, Sucko for Grigorenko.

Annnnd that's why they invented a SHIELD to cover your face... Too bad hockey players make excuses not to wear them. When will it be MANDATORY?

This is far from the "gnarliest hockey injury ever". While playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 70's, Borje Salming had been knocked to the ice on his back while a Detroit RedWing player tried to jump over him. He ended up stepping on Salming's face with his skate. The cut ran the length of his face from chin to forehead and caused more than 300 stitches inside and out. Another time, Buffalo Sabre goalie, Clint Malarchuk was in a collision with a player and that player's skate sliced Malarchuk's juglar artery and without the quick work of the off-ice ambulance crew, he almost bled out on the ice. 30 stitches in hockey is nothing. Hockey is a dangerous game, fast, tough, and dangerous. This was a freak accident and like all good, Canadian boys, he'll be back playing in no time.

Borje Salming TO Maple Leafs, 1985. 250 stitches from his eyebrow to his lip, makes this look like a love bite sports stores used his photo to sell visors

Saw the story on your show today and you really should get your facts straight. Not sure of his name but he said that they have instituted a new rule that says all players must now wear helmets in warm up (BTW its not a "Warm up session") This is TOTALLY FALSE! The NHL could maybe consider this @ the GM meetings during the off season but a league wide ruling like this would have to be approved by the NHLPA. Now if teams take it on themselves and decide to make it mandatory for their players (like the NY Rangers already have) that would be a different story. I realize youre not really a "news show" but you should get yur facts straight before you make statements like that
