Lucy Lawless

Belting Out 'Xena' War Cries

During Oil Tanker Protest

2/23/2012 4:20 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Lucy Lawless is currently strapped to the top of an oil tanker in New Zealand ... screaming "Xena" war cries from the top of her lungs in an effort to halt drilling plans in the Arctic ... and TMZ has it all on tape.

Lawless and six other members of Greenpeace snuck on to the ship today while it was docked in Port of Taranaki ... and now they're REFUSING to leave until the captain agrees to call off the mission.

But even rebels carry cell phones ... and TMZ just spoke with Lucy who tells us she's been unleashing "Xena" battle cries during her protest ... telling us, "I just can't help myself."

Lawless explains, "We know we're going to be arrested ... but ... this is a moral decision for us."

Lucy tells us she's very passionate about protecting the "fragile" ecosystem in the Arctic ... and hopes her efforts will pay off.

And if not ... at least she saw a seal.

She is wearing a plastic helmet. Where does plastic come from?

Some of these comments on here are ridiculous. Of course she drives a car. Of course her helmet is plastic. And that is because we live in a world that is completely dominated by oil use. It is completely unreasonable to believe that everyone who does not believe in excessive oil consumption will stop working immediately to prance off in the trees, because in order for voices to be heard and differences to be made, we WORK in society. Since she has a career to maintain, as all of us do, she can't exactly practice what she preaches. Our dependence on oil is destroying our ecosystem and it is about time people are speaking out against it so that clean, sustainable advances in technology can be made.

those of you saying you wish she would help other people (kids, cancer patients, abused women), maybe ought to look at some of the other charity work she's done? she's on the board of the starship foundation, has done charity work for everything from breast cancer to neglected children to the Trevor project. obviously activism for numerous causes is a part of her career since the start. oh, and fading? hardly, she co-stars on Starz's Spartacus. And yeah, I'm a liberal, who disagrees with much of what Greenpeace does, so uhhh...put that in your piehole.

She's a hypocrit trying to get publicity for a failing career. Let her swim back to shore. How else could she garner this much attention. What a total loser!

I love you Lucy Lawless. You're one of those celebrities who get into the news not by doing stupid illegal things or getting into stupid relationships, but by doing conscientious and courageous illegal things that you believe in. When I'm a 43 year-old hot mama of 3 kids, I want to still have my civil disobedience in me and do what is right for the collective good of the planet. Thank you for showing me that when a woman gets married and has kids, she doesn't have to become more conservative, but can still make sacrifices for her ideals. (Last time you were in the news you were a guest at TED, another of my favorite organizations.)

You idiots saying 'does she have a car' etc need to grow a brain and get a clue, this is about preserving the environment, an oil spill where they want to drill would not be able to be cleaned up and would destroy the ecosystem there, so seriously stop being such morons and realise this isn't about fame or 'failing career' ever seen Spartacus? Oh thats still a pretty excellent thing. Idiots. This is about preserving an environment we take advantage of.

What 'failing' career??? Battlestar Galactica and Spartacus are highly successful.

Also, faltering career? Lucy Flawless is forever being hired on TV.

It's not an Oil Tanker, it's a drillship used for drilling for oil, not transporting it. And those cellphones they are carrying contain contin any number of petroleum based products, not to mention almost everything she is wearing. Easy for everyone to jump on the bandwagon and criticize drilling. Not so easy to find viable alternatve solutions though is it?
