Barry Sanders

Leaves Marriage in the Dust

2/27/2012 4:59 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Barry Sanders and Lauren Campbell-Sanders
He could've been the greatest husband of all time ... but Barry Sanders is leaving the world of marriage ... healthy ... and years before his prime.

Sanders has filed for divorce from his wife, TV newscaster Lauren Campbell-Sanders ... after 11 years of marriage and 3 kids together.

According to OaklandPress.com, Barry filed the docs in Michigan ... in which he explains there's been a breakdown in the marital relationship with no chance they'll be able to work things out.

In the docs, Barry notes that he expects to pay child support for their 3 kids -- ages 4, 8 and 10.

Sanders has another kid from a previous relationship ... Barry Sanders Jr. -- a superstar running back who recently committed to Stanford.

Ok, I'll give TMZ credit for having someone on staff who knows sports. I doubt its Harvey.

But Barry was not 100% when he retired. He kept it pretty quiet but it was known that the last couple of seasons he was beginning to feel his age. Especially the last season when his ribs were sore most of the time.

This did show up in his stats, though barely in the yards per carry. His L3Y he had more negative carries than anyone in the league.

Love has been giving humans the delusion that relationships work/last forever. love fades like it once never existed. love is for the fairy tale believers

Lauren is so gorgeous and seems like a sweet lady. He must be going through a mid-life crisis.

I don't know what happened in their marriage, but I do know that Lauren Campbell is very self absorbed, inconsiderate and not very nice. Have a nice day.

Barry has always been a class act in my eyes. Divorce is a common thing for everyone. I mean it's a 50% divorce rate for a reason it's hard to stay married a long time.

Am so shocked to hear this news and agree with everyone on here. Barry Sanders is, was, and will remain one of the most talented, accomplished, and classiest players the game of football has or will ever see. Not once in his career did he ever spike the ball, taunt an opponent, or make an absolute ass of himself after scoring many of his awe-inspiring touchdowns. I truly believe he retired prematurely for many reasons, among them his body simply could not endure the constant pounding, the Lions were in the beginning of a decade long decline, his coach Bobby Ross misused Barry and a lot of his players, and many also believe he did not want to break Walter Payton's rushing mark the year that he would have likely done so (1999), the year in which Payton died of liver disease and cancer. Had he continued playing, there is no doubt he would have held every record imaginable (don't think Emmitt Smith would ever have surpassed him). His oldest son is truly a chip off the old block, and truly inherited his dad's athleticism. Really hope that the divorce is an amicable one, and that the children are well cared for (with Barry, am confident this will be the case). Best of luck to the Sanders family during this difficult time. BTW TMZ, love the way you worded this article! :)

Where is my comment???? anyway, @romeo santiago,,you are stereotyping , what you need to be asking is why do white women, asian women and other races of women get with black men..after 99% of them have babys mamas, been to jail and let society put it they are drug dealers, (and we know those come in all colors) deadbeat dads, and all kind of crap, but you still see a white woman with them... WHY? aint that much love in the world after all the bad talk and beatdown talk other races have dont to black men..these women still get with them> I can see black women with their own black men but those others.. NOT.. especially after decades of putdowns.. they say 83% of mixed kids have a white mother and black father.. and 17% have a black mother and white father,, do the math on that one why dont you!

I'm surprised athletes get married in the first place. If they end up getting divorced, IMO they end up paying through the nose even long after their pro careers are over, and long after their big money making days are over. Not every athlete ends up with a high paying gig off the field.
