'Luck' Horse Trainer

'Sometimes S**t Happens'

3/16/2012 5:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

0315_luck_dustin_hoffman_HBO_ex
The man who trained the third horse that died on the set of HBO's "Luck" is telling friends ... NO ONE is to blame for the fatality ... insisting the animals received exceptional care, but sometimes "s**t happens."

Sources close to Matthew Chew -- who trained and owned horse #3 -- tell us the people who looked after the horses are some of the best in the business ... who thoroughly examined the animals at least twice a day during production.

Chew has told friends ... the horse was simply playing around when it "misstepped" and fell down Tuesday morning ... suffering a head injury that required it to be euthanized on the set.

We're told Chew believes the incident was a freak accident ... telling one person, "We were just horribly unlucky ... sometimes s**t happens."

Matt Chew is telling the truth. Horses are fragile. Google Saint Liam, one of the best racehorses in recent history. He died from a paddock accident during his first year at stud. He was a very valuable and loved animal who was pampered and cared for and he slipped and fell coming in from the paddock one day. The way he landed caused an injury that even the best horse vets could not fix. Sometimes **** really does just happen. No one can stop it.

It's very unfortunate that TMZ and others sensationalized this accident and caused the end of a decent show.

This is what happens when you are put on TMZ's s**t list. They will nit-pick at everything you do and try to find mind numbing minutia about you. Ha Ha HBO. You guys deserve this bad press.

Most of the people commenting here are so uninformed about horses and are willing to make blanket statements which have almost no basis. Yes, backyard horses sometimes suffer the most. Yes, racehorses and show horses sometimes get hurt, but these horses are generally the most well cared for equines. ANY horse can rear up, slip and hit their head. This can happen even without rearing up. All it takes is a well placed hit. This can (and does) happen when horses pass through a low door, are stabled in stalls with too low ceiling (this a common way to hit the head). Just watch a few episodes of Animal Planet animal cops shows and you will see many instances of terrible horsekeeping. Notice that you won't see any race or show barns on this show. That is because these people usually know how to take care of their animals!! Unless you are a horse professional, keep your yaps shut about shows like this. They are well done. Maybe you should go out and check on that dog that you have tied to a dog house in the back of your property and see how nice that is.

Bu||$h|t! They're cared for as much as a race car is cared for. That's extensive, but they do NOT care that it is a sentient being with feelings and the ability to experience pain and fear. SCREW this production and SCREW Santa Anita race track!

ok so you can argue back and forth whether it was negligence or common risk no matter how much care they took - the final out come is still the same - 3 dead horses, so even if you say that they took as much care and caution as possible and still 3 horses were killed, the odds are it will happen again - is a stupid tv show worth killing more horses???

No More Animal Cruelty

It is disgraceful that even ONE horse died to make a damn tv show. Please complain to the American Humane Assoc who is PAID to see that this DOESN'T happen to animals on set: filmunit@americanhumane.org. Thank you. The animals can't complain for themselves, please speak for them.

No, when ONE horse dies, sh*t happens. When 3 dye, you're out of a job buddy.

The horse was "just playing around", fell and cracked his head? I don't think so... what kind of fools does Matthew Chew take people for? 3 horses dying for the sake of a stupid TV show and for profit are 3 too many. No more horse deaths - no more animal deaths of any kind - and no more mistreatment or animal cruelty for the entertainment of selfish greedy human beings.

I was hoping LUCK would be a catalyst for activists to STOP horse racing in its tracks. LUCK showed in living color what DEGENERATES operate behind the scenes. They should have stopped it after the FIRST horse died. I read that if the show was doing better in ratings, they would have found away AROUND the deaths. Go figgur, Trigga...

Sorry but that's BS!!! I've been riding and training horses almost all my life and I compete in showjumping which is pretty dangerous. A horse does not just fall down and sustains a fatal head injury!!! These so-called "experts" shouldn't even be allowed near a horse let alone handle high spirited thoroughbreds.
