F-18 Jet Crash Hero

Navy Still Hasn't Paid

for Blowing Up My Apartment

The U.S. Navy has not forked over a single cent to one of the men whose apartment was obliterated in last week's F-18 crash ... so says the man himself  ... who's now considering legal action.

TMZ spoke with Colby Smith -- who rushed out of his apartment and helped save one of the pilots from the wreckage following Friday's crash in Virginia.

Colby tells us, the Navy agreed to pay for a hotel room for him and his family after the disaster -- but this morning, the hotel kicked 'em out ... because the Navy hadn't paid.

Colby says his fam had to shell out $400 for the room ... and will be changing hotels tonight. So far, we're told the Navy still hasn't sent a check.

According to Colby, the Navy also agreed to cover all damages stemming from the accident -- but a government rep said it could take up to 2 years before that payment is processed.

Colby tells us a 2 year wait is unacceptable ... and has already met with a lawyer in  the hopes of expediting the process.

As for daily expenses -- we're told the Navy is paying out $89 per person per day for lodging, $30 per day for food, and $200 TOTAL for clothing.

Calls to the Navy were not returned.

5:00 PM PT -- Sources close to Colby tell us, the Navy called his family today after learning about what happened to him at the hotel, and told him where he could pick up a check for $4,000.

We're told Colby's family has since picked up the check -- which will help cover lodging and food.

Guess what? Two years is about right. Last year, thanks to the geniuses in Congress not balancing the budget, my Army paycheck along with others was frozen. They still managed to take out taxes anyway, of course.

Go ahead and cry. The government doesn't give a rat's cloaca about you.

The Navy said today that they would be on site for the next few days meeting with individuals that were affected to complete payments and help with claims. The government just can't hand out money, it needs to be approved, that takes time. Isn't that what everyone is up in arms about anyway, government spending? Also, haven't people heard of homeowner's/ renter's insurance? If his house burned down who would pay for it?

How ungrateful - they could be dead!

Since this JUST happened, they clearly got a pricey room, so maybe the Navy is questioning that, but if legit, I am sure they will pay up as soon as they can.

This is BULL$H!T- They issued checks this morning! The crash just happened on Friday and the following Monday they released funds-some even had money directly deposited to their account-Pretty good turnaround if you ask me. People need to quit trying to "dirty up" things just to get their 15 minutes of fame. Check your facts before you report on something! Oh yeah, I also live in VB!

I am sorry that you lost your home but I have 2 words for you "RENTERS INSURANCE". If you carried it you wouldn't be in this situation right now.

If they had renters insurance they would have been placed in a hotel or new apartment and contents covered.

Thats what I hate about the military. If you owe them money they want it then and there. But if they owe you money it takes FOREVER!!! We're still waiting for them to reimburse us from when we moved 6 months ago. :-/

The Obama administration was quick to pay out 50,000 dollars to each family in Afghanistan, who had a family member killed by the US soldier. There is no money for these people? the military destroyed their homes

I think this guy just wants attention, and was confused about where to pick up his 4K check. His claim that he helped a pilot from the wreckage is complete garbage. The pilots made successful emergency exits (I checked with my bro who flies for the Navy and is based in Norfolk, VA, with these pilots), and when pilots do that they do not land in the wreckage. The whole point of an emergency exit is to NOT land in the wreckage.

The amount of ignorance about the military is amazing. The number of people who provide their opinion, as if it was fact, is so annoying. The $89/day for lodging is based on the same rate that the military pays its own troops to stay in certain areas. It's called per diem, it varies in different cities based on cost of living, and it has been in place for decades. They have to start somewhere, don't they? They made $2300 immediately available, but you do have to sign some paperwork. People who think this is a subjective process know NOTHING about the government. This is NOT an emotional thing for the government, because the government has been through this time and time again AND on much larger scales. If you get a high valuation on your personal property, chances are the government is going to make you whole. However, if you think you are going to recover $100K for emotional distress, you've got another thing coming. BUT...if you are emotionally distressed and you present the need to seek counseling or therapy, THEN the government will ensure that your mental health is taken care of. So, for those of you with foot-in-mouth disease, please don't let your fingers prove your ignorance.
