You know that Acura commercial with Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno that aired during the Super Bowl -- well, we got hold of the casting call document, and they were very specific/exclusionary about their dream African American car dealer.

According to the casting doc, the role of African American car dealer would be played by a "Nice looking, friendly, Not too dark" African American car dealer.

Casting document for the Acura NSX Super Bowl Commercial
We just got hold of the document from an African American actor who didn't fit the profile, and who's pissed.

We made lots of calls, trying to find out why "dark" African Americans weren't right for the role.  Someone associated with casting the commercial tells us ... one of the reasons for the "not too dark" restriction was because lighting and special effects would get tricky.

We made calls to Acura but no one got back to us.

update_bar
Acura just apologized for the wording in the casting call document -- claiming, "We apologize to anyone offended by the language."

I THINK THEY WANTED "LIGHT COLOR" IS SO HE CAN APPEAR LATINO OR BLACK.
ALSO, THAT WHAT CASTING IS FOR, FINDING THE RIGHT PERSON FOR THE ROLE.

PEOPLE ARE TO SENSITIVE-CHILL OUT.

ACURA SAVED MONEY BY HIRING ONE PERSON TO FILL TWO MINORITY GROUPS.
SAVING COST MAKES CARS CHEAPER FOR CONSUMERS

THANK YOU

Although this seems really bad, anyone who works in Hollywood will tell that it is correct that it's hard to light people of with coloring that is too different (the star of the commercial is way white) and also that as actors we get picked through and chosen by our physical attributes all the time. They ask for light or dark skinned caucasians too. The biggest request at the moment is "ethnically ambiguous" to cast their net across the largest target market.
Sorry - it may suck, but every performer in Hollywood gets the same scrutiny.

I must say these are the stupid comments I have every heard. America is just sooo racist. The fun thing is that people want to talk about how people dont like Black people. How the acura commerical is not racist. But in reality 90 percent of world is colored. Its only small percent that are white. Must of the world doesnt like white people. They just deal with white people because they have to. Other than that dont want anything to do with white people.

Jerry is pretty pale so a very dark skinned person would probably make him look even paler. Its not always about race, so stop playing that card. Its getting really old!

This racist crap is ridiculous. So what if they want a light skinned person? People need to chill out. I'm sick of all these people crying racisim. Black white orange or purple...it's whatever the director/producer wants. You don't have to have one of each!

This is basically saying that Acura doesn't want any dark skinned people selling their cars, or representing them. So how about don't sell Acura's to dark skinned people then. Oh but no, You'll take their money but they are not good enough to represent you. PLEASE

Discretion

Anyone who is or have been an aspiring actor/actress knows that this is common practice. This is done with every single race Caucasian, African American, Latino's everybody. So for him to get pissed either means he hasn't been acting that long or he just wants some attention.

People are allowed to cast people who have the look they want. There is a reason movies don't have ugly chicks in them.

Fair is fair. When they need the look of a criminal, the dark skinned blacks get the nod.

It's really difficult to judge this commercial and this do***ent. The look of the commercial is very washed out and the lighting appears to support a dark complexion. However, actors are subjective not objective. And Hollywood is brutal...WOMEN are far more subject to scrutiny, sexism, offensive behavior at casting. I think America needs to get real about how fake television is. I think its also far to say that people in general have sub conscience stereotypes. I am definitely more bothered by the "nice looking" and "friendly" aspects of this story. I hate how the media perpetuates the "big scary dark man" but I guess this commercial doesn't help with that either...

Just Reading

The problem isn't the guy complaining OR a racial group...the group in charge of casting was foolish enough to print their preference rather than just review the applicants and reject whomever they wanted. Example: if you state you are looking for an Asian actor but don't want some one that looks "too Asian" don't put that in print...reveal the head shots (pictures they submit)and call back those that "fit" what your looking for. It's really that simple...sheesh.

Why is anyone shocked? We live in a very racist country. It's never going to change.

this is so NOT a big deal. casting agents are always looking for a specific look. Do the thin actors complain when the agent is looking for someone chubby? or someone with a beard, but not too hairy? should I complain because I'm super white and they're looking for someone with a nice natural tan? even though I can certainly do the job, I don't fit the look they want and the business is ALL about looks. don't kid yourself!
