Jason Kidd

Ex-Wife Defends NBA Star,

Mavs Should Retire Jersey

8/22/2012 5:00 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

0822_kidd_jowanna_gettyJason Kidd has an unlikely ally in his feud with Mark Cuban -- his arch-nemesis ex-wife Joumana ... who tells TMZ the former Mavs superstar DESERVES to have his jersey retired in Dallas ... no matter how much Mark hates his guts.

The Kidd vs. Cuban feud kicked into high gear this week when the Mavs owner told the media he would NEVER retire JK's jersey in Dallas because he was upset at the way Kidd left the team back in July.

We figured the statement would be music to the ears of Joumana Kidd ... since she went through a NASTY split with Jason back in 2007 ... the kind of divorce that makes Tom and Katie's split look downright friendly.

But Joumana tells TMZ ... that just ain't the case ... and despite her rocky relationship with Jason, she believes the 39-year-old -- who played a key role on the Mavs 2011 championship team -- should be treated like the hoops hero he is.

"[Jason] is an amazing basketball player I can never take that away from him.  He’s one of the best guards to ever play in the league. “

She adds, "Lots of fans would love to see his jersey retired in Dallas ... I believe he’s earned it and he deserves that based on what he did for the Mavericks.”

Cuban suggested he might change his mind over time ... if he does, Jason might have to send a thank-you note to his ex.

My bad. First, how does one get their jersey retired? Second, didn't he get liquored up and beat up somebody?

Puh-leeze, so after a foul divorce she now is singing his praises? Be careful JK, she is probably singing louder to her attorney for more $$$.

Most of us former point guards can only dream of playing the point-guard-position like Jason Kidd.

So she's right - and it's appropriate for her to come out on Kidd's behalf.

Mark Cuban's a personal hero - of mine and a lot of others - so I respect MC and his own issue.

Frankly, I'd have made the same move - to NYC - and I'm certain Jason's agent/lawyers were pushing him to NY.

Loyalty no longer exists in sports.

You just HAVE to make the move that makes the most fiscal-sense -

If anyone can figure out how to replace J-Kidd, it's " "M3" (M-Cuban).

After his DUI accident I wouldn't be rushing to celebrate him.

He's been a good solid player, but this what happens when you jump around to a lot of teams. No one owes it to him to retire his number, it is an honor, and his best playing years were not in Dallas.

Hey, and maybe Mark Cuban can find a good point guard on "Shark Tank."

Isn't this the same guy who you claimed beat you like a red-headed stepchild?! Did that alimony check run out?

Looks like her nose has healed nicely from the time he sucker punched her in the face.

Kidd deserves to be in the HOF I think on the body of his total work during his career. It is more of a stretch for any one team that he played for to retire his jersey since he spent significant time with several teams.

He spent a whole 6 seasons in Dallas & his numbers really suck after his second stint in Dallas. Why should they retire his number, they shouldn't.

I would like to say tell me why I should care about this, but I DON"T and it's pathetic.
