ABC News

Sued for $1.2 BILLION

A major U.S. beef processing company is suing ABC News for $1.2 billion -- claiming the network's coverage of a product called "pink slime" has duped consumers into believing it's unhealthy and unsafe.

The company behind the lawsuit is Beef Products Inc. -- which claims ABC News made somewhere around 200 "false and misleading and defamatory" statements about the product ... which BPI refers to as lean, finely textured beef.

In one report, ABC featured a former USDA scientist who claimed 70% of the ground beef found in supermarkets contains pink slime ... "beef trimmings that were once used only in dog food and cooking oil, now sprayed with ammonia to make them safe to eat and then added to most ground beef as a cheaper filler."

An attorney for BPI told the AP ... "[The ABC News reports have] caused consumers to believe that our lean beef is not beef at all -- that it's an unhealthy pink slime, unsafe for public consumption, and that somehow it got hidden in the meat."

A rep for ABC insists "The lawsuit is without merit" ... adding, "We will contest it vigorously."

According to the AP, a BPI rep says the ABC reports have had an "enormous impact" on the company -- with 3 of it's 4 plants shutting down since the stories hit the air ... resulting in a loss of 650 jobs.

Wasn't it NBC that got hit on Dateline for fudging a report on trucks and gas tank explosions? I'm thinking ABC is going to end up paying here because this company can definitely prove damage

The industry is losing money and they need someone to blame. They are the most corrupt industry, aside form the pharmeaucutical industry. Perhaps they should go after the scientists that are backing up the pink slime sludge stuff, not the news media who is just reporting the news. It's about time that vile industry begins to lose money over the poor quality of their industrial pracatices.

Back when I used to eat red meat years ago a manager of the meat dept. told us about the red they added to the meat because i said it was slimy. On another occasion it did in fact smell like ammonia. I got so sick of always wondering if we were going to get decent meat each time we bought it and then one day I just couldn't eat it anymore. I have found that meatless burgers, chicken patties, bacon, and hot dogs taste awesome.

So now ABC is getting sued for telling the truth!!!!!???
I believe that I have a right to know what I am buying to eat. If they are selling me "beef" that is only fit for dog food, why not just buy the can of dog food and eat that? Lots cheaper.
Oh yeah, a lot of old folks were doing that when they couldn't afford real food on their fixed incomes. Big deal was made of that down in FL about 25 years ago. Guess it's OK now to just soak it with ammonia and increase the price by about 600%. The people who work in these garbage factories should have to eat their own offal.

It was not ABC that got me freaked out about the pink slime it was the video that went viral prior to the ABC and other news outlets' coverage. "Finely textured Beef Product" is the name they want us all to call it but several of my friends posted the video on Facebook and it can still be viewed on YouTube. What's next, are they going to sue any of us who commented on how disgusting pink slime is? I like our 1st Amendment rights and the public pressure brought by the news coverage did get them to remove it from some beef and got the grocery stores (some) to label if the ground beef contains it. That's what a FREE PRESS is supposed to do, bring us information and then we can decide how to react to it, in this case force change for the better! Greedy bas*ards are just ticked off that they can't make extra profit by using parts of the animal that we knowingly would not go for, unless of course they were in a hot dog. (lol but true)

I don't think I'm getting it. Are the suing because of use of the word "unhealthy" pink slime, as opposed to "healthy" pink slime?

I wish ABC and other mainstream media would have the nads to do the same sort of food journalism on the dangers of GMOs or Genetically Modified Food that we are all eating -- unless you eat Organic -- even though there have been ZERO long-term studies on GMO safety. Monsanto (the biggest GMO provider) spends millions to make sure there are no labeling requirements in the USA, so we don't know if they're in our food -- even though 40 countries around the world require this GMO labeling.

On the ballot on November 6 is California Proposition 37, which would require mandatory labeling of genetically engineered food (GMOs). It has opposition to the tune of tens of millions of dollars from big food and agriculture corporations that don't think you have the right to know if there are GMOs in your food. If you live in California, please vote YES on Prop 37.
