'Steel Magnolias' Producer

Lifetime Remake

Is RIPPING Me Off

10/1/2012 6:10 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

1001_steel_magnolias_lifetimeThe woman who produced the disgustingly sappy tearjerker, "Steel Magnolias" is suing over the upcoming Lifetime TV remake of the film -- claiming she's not getting the credit or the cash she deserves.

Victoria L. White -- executive producer of the 1989 film starring Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, and Shirley MacLaine -- filed suit today against Sony Pictures and Lifetime Television ... producers of the new TV movie starring Queen Latifah and Phylicia Rashad.

In the documents, White claims she has a "Television agreement" that entitles her to a co-producer or co-executive producer credit on any TV project based on her hit film.

According to the suit, White also says she's entitled to some cash for the Lifetime remake -- including a $15,000 fee, plus up to 3.75% of net profits from the movie.

White further alleges Sony is fully aware of her TV deal ... because it gave her a co-producer credit and compensation the first time this happened. For those who don't remember (as in all of us), there was already a 1992 CBS TV movie based on "Steel Magnolias."

White is suing for compensation on the Lifetime remake -- and she wants an injunction to stop the film from airing ... unless she gets her on-screen credit. The movie is scheduled to air Oct. 7.

Here's what we can't figure ... why is this movie still being remade?

I hope this movie is NOT aired! BUT ofcourse IF it isnt, then Tyler Perry, Oprah, Al Sharpton and all the other high profile African American/black celebs will say it was not aired because of racism. And that is what you call REVERSE RACISM. An all black cast, doing a movie that had a white writer, white cast, and they do not give any credits, or royalties to the original writer. If you wanna dance, then you gotta pay the fiddler.

I am NOT, and will NOT watch this piece of junk crap! IF it does actually get aired, I hope it flops miserably. I hope it bombs so bad! And that's how you send the message to Hollywood, that they should NOT mess with Classics and you sure dont remake them. Leave them alone!

Sorry, but I don't and never will understand why there has to be a black cast version of every white cast movie. You don't see white people clamoring to remake Roots or Friday or Waiting to Exhale, etc., to make an all white cast version of those. Try something original and stop copying classics like Steel Magnolias.

I don't understand how they can remake a movie that was based on a real life tragedy...this is ridiculous! But just like others are saying, if the situation were reversed and the all black cast was changed to all white, there would have been some hell raised!

Its word for word......meaning using the original script from the original movie......If she wrote the original, then she needs to be paid for this horrid remake.....its as simple as that! Whats next.....Sally Struthers doing the Esther Rolle Movie?

I honestly don't think it's a race thing. It's about respecting the truth. Steel Magnolias is a classic and you just can't remake a classic movie.

It's a freaking movie. Watch. Don't watch. But stop saying it racist. They aren't denying people anything because of race because I'm sure we don't know the whole story. Some of these comments are childish and petty and I'm pretty sure are from people who wouldn't know what racism was if it hit them in the face.

Lets not be coy here lets be real. Its the black or African American version. The White version doesnt tell the tale from a Black/African American women P.O.V. and thats why they are remaking it.

Remake, huh? I know there was major jealousy over the film, "The Help". I'm sure that will be a remake as soon as possible, as well.

i love steel magnolias, the original, i don't think they shoulda have made a remake anyways, wtf not everything needs a remark, and i'm actually a fan of queen latifah and Phylicia Rashad.
"and i say this as black women so you cant say this a race", i think its stupid, and writers and producers need to start being more original and stop remaking stuff, and they wouldn't be in this situation,

All Black Cast or All White Cast, Steel Magnolias doesn't need a re-make.

This is a total disgrace remaking this movie with the black actors, no it isn't a racist comment, it's a real one. This movie should be banned from being released.
