'The Next Generation' Star

'Star Trek' INVENTED

The iPad

10/4/2012 11:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

100412_spiner_launch
"Star Trek: The Next Generation" star Brent Spiner (who played android Lieutenant Commander Data) says Steve Jobs was a DIRTY COPYCAT ... who stole the idea for the iPad from "Star Trek" producers ... 23 years AFTER they invented it.

Spiner was leaving a supermarket in L.A. when we asked about the influence of "Star Trek" on modern technology -- and he replied, "We invented everything!"

Spiner pointed out Captain Picard's iPad-like device called the "PADD," but says the intellectual thievery didn't stop there -- claiming "Star Trek" creators also masterminded the flip phone, blue tooth, and TELEPORTATION.

Of course, Apple hasn't perfected teleportation ... yet.

There's a difference between taking a solid piece of plastic and painting some icons on the front, and actually designing and building a working machine.

When I was a kid I drew flying cars w/ my crayons. Does that mean I get the credit when GM ever rolls one off the assembly line?

There's truth in what Spiner says. A lot of innovations come from science fiction writing. All it needs is practical application.

Haha is pretty amazing how many devices in the Star Trek show....that were fake...actually ended up being real workable devices later.
The original Star Wars too, all the gadgets and ideas in that story and movie were pretty frickin' amazing and original ideas at the time.
...think I'll call some family up and have 'em over for a Star Wars movie weekend in a couple days...

Although...I think the idea of turning a phone into a typewriter isn't exactly forward technology. I think someone probably brought that up as a joke in a think tank...and they took the guy seriously.

It's one thing to somewhat copy the way something looks then to actually create a working device.....SMH.

Captain Picard put that future iPad down and hid it quick. I bet he was looking at future porn where women's clothes disintegrate.

So I guess Ian Fleming invented the portable phone huh? How about giving Maxwell smart credit for his shoe phone (rolls eyes)

And the iPhone came from the Dick Tracy creators. Dick just wore it around his wrist.

He's right. The History Channel had a show on called "How William ****ner Changed the World" in which the inventors of a lot of this technology talk about wanting to invent the stuff on Star Trek.

This isn't news at all. I remembered watching a doc about the tremendous influence "ST" had in the geek culture, who went on to work for companies like Apple and create devices like the IPod and so on.

Spiner is just stating facts.... no big deal.

Sorry. But, Kubrick beat ST there 20 years earlier:

^^^^^ @blah... good point. Kubrick only directed.
2001: A Space Odyssey was written by Arthur C. Clark.
