Australian Radio Station

History of Airing

Dangerous Pranks

There's some serious hypocrisy at the Australian radio station that pulled the plug on the Kate Middleton pranksters -- because the station has a history of setting up dangerous stunts ... some purposely designed to cause panic and mayhem.

2DayFM's "Kyle and Jackie O" show aired a segment called "Desperate Acts" back in 2009 ... where a listener was given $1,000 to call her sister and convince her their mother was injured, bleeding, and in need of medical attention.

It worked ... the sister called 911 and sent paramedics speeding to the mother, who was totally fine.

That hoax prompted a police investigation.

Later in 2009 ... Kyle and Jackie O hooked up a teenager to a lie detector while her mother grilled her about her sex life. The stunt blew up in their faces when the girl suddenly revealed she had been raped when she was 12.

That segment led to another police investigation, and got the DJs a week-long suspension.

Additionally, 2DayFM has reportedly been on probation multiple times for violating Australia's broadcast code.

Despite getting repeatedly slapped on the wrist for their stunts ... 2DayFM honchos still signed off on Michael Christian and Mel Greig pulling the Kate prank.

2DayFM's response to the nurse's death has been that "no one could have predicted" the tragedy -- arguably true -- but they've also broadcast stunts where tragedy is not only foreseeable, but desired.

So, canceling the DJ's show ... hypocritical?

It appears to be a MURDER. They say it is suicide in order to humiliate her family. Think about it.

This information changes things for me. These people have a history of bad pranks and the station supported them They should not be on the air and the station should lose it's license.

You cannot go out in ignorance, making these types of calls to a culture that you do not know. They were ignorant, obviously, of the fact that if it worked (and they hoped that it would, obviously) that any person in the middle would be under tremendous fire.

You lot at TMZ are exactly the same. Making quit comments about people like they are nothing, disrespectful comments - especially about women who are pregnant, and you ride a slippery slope when you think that there will not one day be pay-back for your own ignorance. So, as you post all these things about this situation, you might want to be very aware of the things that you also say and write. #Trashpeople.

those pranks ware hilarious.sucks that they get canceled due to someone with issues killing themselves.but go figure in todays pc society.there always has to be a scapegoat.instead of blaming the person who killed themselves.its always someone elses fault.

Some people here are lacking basic comprehension. All the stunts listed by tmz were not all preformed by those two DJ's involved in the Royal prank. Mel and Michael are relatively new there and inexperienced, so the problem is with station management. Those two are scapegoats.

I know radio stations prank call all the time... But they took it too far. (The nurse incident still is as bad as people make it seem)

Seems as if everyone was laughing the day after, but now everyone wants to play the blame game. Should we blame it on the media instead of the DJs?

Ok, i am an australian! Currntly still living in australia. My country is so devistated by this tragedy as is the dj's!!! The world shudnt be hating on them as they simply did there job. Prank calls have been going on for years and years all over the world!!! They dont decide if it goes on air, that is made by people much higher up!!! The poor women took her life due to mental issues BEFORE the prank call and the world media including tmz played it over and over and over and thats wat pushed her to take her life!! No one cud of ever seen this happening and its tradgic it did! Stop calling for the dj's to be charged or taken off air because they are so devistated by this they may never ever want to go on the air again. The family of the deceased is getting no support as the media only focuses on the djs!! Its pathetic and needs to stop!!!

I just want to clear up a few misunderstandings here about the article. All the other pranks mentioned on this article besides the suicide one was caused by another pair of dj's on the station, Jackie and Kyle. They are notorious for doing stupid things on air in Australia. MICHAEL and MEL, the dj's in the latest saga, did not tape the piece live. The radio station heads tried to reach the hospital 5 times for permission to air the piece but decided to air it anyways without getting the proper release so I think the radio station is even at a bigger fault than the dj's. As much as I don't condone the act, I think the media has played a bigger role in escalating the prank that leads to the death of the nurse. If they did not make it such a big issue, the whole incident would have been long forgotten before the nurse, who clearly had issues of her own, decided to take her own life despite the fact she has 2 young children.

The lack of compassion for these two people is disgusting. A life has been lost yet you sit behind your computers and judge the other two people involved. This is what is wrong with the world today. the lack of compassion and the keyboard warriors that think they're so freaking perfect!!!
