LeAnn Rimes

Flip-Flopping on

'X Factor' Performance

12/20/2012 2:33 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Someone in LeAnn Rimes' camp is LYING ... because the singer is now saying she never gave a statement to TMZ about her controversial performance on "X Factor."

Here's the deal -- after reports surfaced that LeAnn may have been wasted during her performance with 13-year-old Carly Rose Sonenclar, we called Rimes' rep for comment.

The rep gave us a quote that we were told we could put on TMZ.com and attribute to LeAnn Rimes. We were told LeAnn was NOT impaired and if there was any awkwardness it was only because "I was trying to help this 13-year-old girl who was having some trouble with the song."

But moments ago, Rimes posted a message on her Twitter page saying she has NOT given the media a quote -- noting, "It's a shame that gossip and lies are overshadowing the performance of Carly."

She added, "It was an amazing opportunity to share this experience with Carly and I know I'll be watching for her to win tonight."

Sounds to us like LeAnn is backtracking HARD because she realized what she said and doesn't want to sound like she's dumping on a 13-year-old girl.

So even though TMZ didn't actually TALK to her, they're saying that she lied to them. "But we talked to a 'rep'!!"

Yeah, you showed that you're nothing like real journalists is what you did... Anyone surprised?

It’s a credit to both LeAnn Rimes and Trisha Yearwood, who both handled an uncomfortable situation with so much class, never (as far as we know) making their competition for the song ‘How Do I Live’ personal. At the 1998 Grammy Awards, Rimes performed the song and then stood off stage to learn if she would win the Best Female Country Vocal Performance award.

Yearwood was also nominated — it the first time two artists were nominated for the same song within a single Grammy category — and she graciously accepted the trophy. “It was very uncomfortable for me,” Yearwood would say later. “The radio stations started having play-offs where they would play both versions and people would call in and vote.”

“I was surprised the record went to No. 1 because of all the obstacles. This was probably the most heartfelt No. 1 because we had to work so hard for it.” Rimes’ version also went to No. 1, but on the AC charts. She was the original choice for the song, but producers of the movie ‘Con Air’ decided not to use her version of the track for the movie, instead hiring Yearwood. Yearwood says she had no idea Rimes was going to release it as a single at the same exact time. The version favored by country audiences ended up on the the list of the Top 100 Country Songs.

OMFG, thanks for the slap into reality. This was the song that was nominated for a Country music award and both LeAnn and Trisha were nominated for the same song, right? LeAnn won the award, if I'm not mistaken and I remember being confused over that.

leann was very good last night, she was very thoughtful and loving towards that little girl, she's very pretty and don't deserve the stupid bad publicity from anyone. we thought she was great. leann has had a hard life, from what i seen and heard, and she dosen't warrant this childless crap! my whole family loves her and admires her strength on stage, i'm a hard rocker, but everyone i know thinks she's fantastic so, so back off you donkeys!

People don't like or want anything to do with a home wrecker. Those children will grow up and hate you for what you did to their family.

LeAnn is a heifer chewing her cud. Her mouth moves but nothing intelligent comes out.

I don't know about drunk, but LeAnn's performance was horrific. She seemed to forget half the words to her own song and "over-sang" 99% of it. She was trying TOO hard to sound good and ended up sounding like a cat in labor. It's sad, really, because she had serious talent back in the day, as well. She did nothing to "help" Carly. Little Carly was helping her... you could hear Carly changing tones as needed to try and match the caterwauling LeAnn was doing.
