Sues NFL

Over Brain Injuries

Junior Seau
's family has filed a lawsuit against the NFL over brain injuries the Chargers legend sustained during his career -- injuries they claim caused him to kill himself.

The family filed the wrongful death lawsuit today in San Diego, claiming the league willfully hid the truth about the dangers of repetitive blows to the head ... such as those regularly sustained by professional football players.

According to the lawsuit, Seau suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) from those hits -- a condition that his family claims drove him to suicide.

The Seau family is also suing NFL helmet manufacturer Riddell -- calling the helmets dangerous and claiming the company was "negligent in their design."

Seau died last May after shooting himself in the chest. He was 43.

The Seau lawsuit is just one of a reported 175 lawsuits filed against the NFL by players and their families over head injuries sustained during their careers.

After filing the lawsuit, the family released a statement, saying, "We know this lawsuit will not bring back Junior. But it will send a message that the NFL needs to care for its former players, acknowledge its decades of deception on the issue of head injuries and player safety, and make the game safer for future generations."

The NFL hasn't responded to the lawsuit -- but after it was revealed Seau had CTE, the league released a statement, saying, "The NFL ... is committed to supporting a wide range of independent medical and scientific research that will both address CTE and promote the long-term health and safety of athletes at all levels."

Suicide is a weak and selfish act. The injuries DID NOT make him commit suicide, Junior himself did. The family is suing just to get money, they should be ashamed of themselves. I do not feel sorry for people and their families if their loved ones ever decide to even think about that selfish and weak act.

Of COURSE they are - get that money from dead relatives. No one apparently cared when he was getting slammed around as a player, only afterwards, when their handouts dried up, then it's "oh dear, he was damaged".

Don't get me wrong, i grew up watching Junior play in the NFL for the better part of two decades, but this lawsuit by his family makes about as much sense as an enlisted man in the military having his family sue for a wrongful death by way of a gunshot wound while deployed. Injuries and trauma are part of sports. They get paid millions of dollars to entertain and its ALWAYS been part of the risk since the inception of the game. It was tragic what happened of course, but this lawsuit is baseless. At the end of the day equipment can only protect you so much.

Football is a dangerous sport. You have to know what you are getting into when you decide to play. Everybody these days are sue happy. It is sad what happened, but playing a sport that requires slamming into each other will have consequences.

He played willingly, was paid a lot of money and knew the risks. It's sad he had brain damage and killed himself but this lawsuit is wrong in my opinion.

There are suicides every day all over the world and country, mostly boys and men, as they kill themselves at 5 times the rate of girls and women, that's what happens when a gender is taught to repress and stuff down their feelings to supposedly "be a man" instead of being encouraged to express how they really feel, and when a feminist-influenced society uses every possible media source from magazines to TV scripts to insult boys and men, invalidate what they go through, treat them with general disrespect and suck the life out of them.
Always sad when they lose hope and feel they need to kill themselves, just as sad when a girl or woman does it.
Most of these people around the world and country who commit suicide have never played a game of football.

Show me where it says that playing football will result in multiple blows to the head... Oh...wait... THAT'S COMMON SENSE! Noted: common sense diminishes after several blows to the head...
