Oscar Pistorius' Blade Legs

NOT Considered Weapons

Behind Bars

EXCLUSIVE

Olympian Oscar Pistorius' carbon fiber blade legs could EASILY be used as a weapon behind bars -- but a rep for the South African prison where he's locked up tells TMZ, officials have decided not to confiscate the prosthetics.

The rep tells TMZ, Pistorius will be allowed to keep his legs ... at least until he faces a judge in a few hours -- at which point that decision might change.

Pistorius stands accused of murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

We're told SA prison officials typically confiscate any item that can be used as a weapon -- shivs, clubs, anything that can be filed down to a point (including hard plastics) -- but this is a special circumstance.

We called a few jails on this side of the Atlantic for good measure ... and we were told Pistorius would be lucky to keep his legs behind bars, especially if he were placed in gen pop ... where another inmate could potentially use Pistorius' legs to cause real damage.

Competitive advantage: Pistorius.

That's a good question. I found this, but it applies to the US only:

Standard 23-6.10 Impairment-related aids

Prisoners whose health or institutional adjustment would otherwise be adversely affected should be provided with medical prosthetic devices or other impairment-related aids, such as eyeglasses, hearing aids, or wheelchairs, except when there has been an individualized finding that such an aid would be inconsistent with security or safety. When the use of a specific aid believed reasonably necessary by a qualified medical professional is deemed inappropriate for security or safety reasons, correctional authorities should consider alternatives to meet the health needs of the prisoner.

Wait! He walks around on the BLADES? That can't be right.

Okay I will preface this by saying that I am an amputee myself, double arm plus right leg. Those blade legs, based at least on what I know from personal experience, are not frequently used for like....walking around and just chilling out with. They're specifically for running, especially the Flex Foot Cheetah blades he used for the Olympics. More than likely he has other lower grade legs used for daily walking that are less expensive and built with feet, not blades.

He's going to get beaten over the head with them regardless of which ones he has, I would just be very surprised if he opted for those blades in prison. Not wise. But neither is killing someone, so.

They should most definitely remove all prosthetics if he murdered someone. Duh!

He only uses the carbon fibre blades for competition. He would probably be wearing his ordinary prosthetics.

He only uses the carbon fibre blades during competition. He usually has normal prosthetic legs with shoes attached.

This whole thing is so bizarre. One minute he's winning gold the next he's been arrested for murder. This is so NOT normal!
