Taylor Swift Sued

Over Epic Canadian

Hoedown Disaster

2/18/2013 2:40 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE

0215-taylor-swift-tmz
Taylor Swift
got paid $2.5 MILLION to perform at a hoedown in Canada ... but when the show got canceled, Taylor kept the money ... this according to a new lawsuit obtained by TMZ.

Long story short ... Swift was supposed to headline a huge country music concert in Ottawa in August 2012 called the Capital Hoedown.

Problem is ... the promoters couldn't get their act together, and to the dismay of the Canadian country music community, the hoedown was 86'd.

So why is this Taylor's problem?

According to a new lawsuit filed in federal court in New York, Swift got all of her cash up front ... and the ticket company, which had to refund $1.8 million in tickets, thinks she should foot the bill ... since she never actually did anything. In fact, even if TS were to pay, she would still walk with $700k in profit.

But Taylor's rep tells TMZ the singer NEVER made a deal with the ticket company -- and has not yet seen the lawsuit ... which means she's not exactly rushing to fork over a $1.8 million check.

In related news, they have hoedowns in Canada?!?!?

Her contract should be cut n dry, either she gets to keep the money or not.

The way these stories are presented makes it sound like Taylor Swift was on the way to the mall with the money. I doubt very seriously she has any say so about what is or is not kept. Geez!

Her act isn't worth 1.8 million. Canada needs the money back.

This isn't true. Taylor gave the money back after the show was cancelled. Doesn't anyone check facts anymore?

There is much more to this story than is being told here. Always another side and somewhere in the middle is the truth. A hoedown/Taylor Swift makes no sense to me...I smell a rat and it may be the promoters and lawyers taking the money. The devil is in the details.

i think they would have been better off just asking for her to help out rather then sue. its not like suing has a chance

I thought "that's a lot of money for a Taylor Swift performance". But then I remembered it's Canadian dollars. ;-)

If she gave up another $2.5M job to be there, or could have given up another job, she should get to keep the money. The producers screwed up, not her. It should all be covered in the contract anyway.

Who pays 2.5 mil up front?

If she asks for it up front and the promoter agrees to give her the money. That would make him an real idiot.

Fot her to collect the money and not give it back because of a loophole in the contract would make her a sleaze.

The ticket agency should really be suing the promoter, not her.

The CDN$ is at par, if not higher, with the US$. This "hoedown" was in murky waters from the beginning with multiple changes in venues as well as dates when it would take place.I wouldn't put it past the promoters to have taken the money. However, if TS paid it back, there must he a paper trail...
