First Baptist Church

Tim Tebow Was

'Pressured' to Cancel Speech

Tim Tebow was unjustly pressured by the media to back out of his speaking appearance at the controversial First Baptist Church in Dallas ... at least according to the church.

A rep for the church tells TMZ, "We are saddened that Mr. Tebow felt pressure to back out of his long-planned commitment from numerous New York and national sports and news media who grossly misrepresented past comments made by our pastor, Dr. Robert Jeffress, specifically related to issues of homosexuality and AIDS, as well as Judaism."

Rev. Jeffress has been quoted as saying, "70 percent of the gay population" has AIDS -- and has described Judaism, Islam and Mormonism as religions from the "pit of hell."

According to the church, Tebow called Dr. Jeffress Wednesday evening to say that for "personal and professional reasons he needed to avoid controversy" ... and would be canceling the appearance which was scheduled for April 28.

The church says Tebow told Rev. Jeffress he'd still like to come speak at First Baptist Dallas sometime in the future -- and adds, "Dr. Jeffress shares a message of hope, not hate."

Tebow says "Dr. Jeffress shares a message of hope, not hate." Has he listened to him?? If yes, then I don't know what he feels is hate. Not Christ like at all.

If Tim Tebow is so spineless that the media can pressure him out of speaking at this church, then why does the church even want him?

Maybe Tim isn't as much of a nut job as I thought he was. This "church" is crazier than a bag of squirrels.

Don't let Tebow fool you. He knew full well what this church stood for. He just wanted to secure his monetary future. Imagine having to spend the rest of your life cir***sizing little boy's in third world nations...... like he did before the hype turned him into an NFL player.

All religions insist the rest of the religions are wrong, always been that way.
Christians preach against Judaism.
Jews preach against Christianity.
Nothing new.
Though you'll always find followers of Christianity smiling and pretending they're fine with Judaism just as you'll find followers of Judaism smiling and pretending to they're fine with Christianity.
...until they preach from their writings :D
Tim Tebow should do whatever he wants, not what others pressure him to do or expect him to do

The only thing I know for sure after reading these comments is that neither side on an issue is immune to idiots.

In this case, this minister does indeed appear to preach hate. Unlike the Bible itself, that tells us to love each other, he lambastes every religion but his own. FYI, Baptist churches direct hire their ministers, so it is usually someone who states exactly what the congregation itself believes in, versus having someone in the pulpit advising them that they are wrong, or who tries to change their minds and attitudes. The next Baptist church down the road may have entirely different thoughts on the same subjects.

TMZ's story has a few glaring inaccuracies... First, there's no clear evidence to suggest that Jeffress ever said that 70 percent of homosexuals have AIDS. Instead, Jeffress is on the record quoting a gay-rights leader who said that 70 percent of those with AIDS were homosexual or bisexual. There's a big difference... Furthermore, in the video posted from RightWingwatch.org, Jeffress clearly refers to Islam and Mormonism as religions from the pit of hell, but he did not do the same with Judaism. Jeffress, like most evangelicals, strongly supports Israel while teaching traditional Christian doctrine that faith in Christ alone is the only assurance of salvation. Unlike Rev. Wright, Jeffress' comments are NOT anti-Semitic. Dr. Jeffress' sermons and comments are widely available for others to see, so there's no reason for TMZ and other media outlets to report them inaccurately.
