Navajo Nation

'Mike & Molly' Joke

3/3/2013 6:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

030113_mikeandmindy_launchThe Navajo Nation is LIVID after a joke aired on "Mike & Molly" ... calling Native Americans a bunch of drunks ... and now the group is demanding an apology from CBS.

In case you missed it, Mike's mother on the show -- an Archie Bunker type -- says, "You ever been to Arizona? It's just furnace full of drunk Indians."

The joke isn't sitting well in the Native American community. A rep for the Navajo Nation tells TMZ,  "For a show like this displaying us in a negative light is just unacceptable, they are taking a shot at the entire state of Arizona and its indigenous people."

The rep says, "An apology would be the right thing to do, but some damage done can't be fixed in an apology."

Calls to CBS weren't returned.

Have you been to New Mexico? The joke is spot on, not racist.

The crying Indian? Isn't. He's Italian.

With stereotyping Indians , or any comedy shows words racist, you’re going to get a fake apology from someone who has been told to write a "sorry for that joke " letter!

That was pretty jacked up and mean. Why should they be the butt of a joke like that? That being said, they should make a public announcement educating people. Not demand an apology from a bunch of ignorant losers.

The last thing in the world that a cast of morbidly obese people with portion control issues should do is make assumptions like this for all Navajo people which is so wrong. People of the skin color who stole land, raped and killed, stole ideas, technology and agriculture should have more respect. Many of you seem mad that the Nation wants an apology. If someone said "Hitler was a forward thinker in seeing the slickness of the Jews..." You would be up in arms.

I thought the point was the character that said this IS racist and strongly opinionated, ( against everyone) don't they need to show what her character is like with comments like this to build a sense of realism?

Dr Samuel Weiscrak

I would demand they show statistical proof that in fact, the Indian nation is NOT a bunch of drunk Indians first! LMAO

Offensive or not stereotypes develop for a reason. They're almost always some seed of truth in their founding... too bad, so sad cry me a river!

Omgawd! I lived in AZ for 3+ years in a place just slightly off of the reservation, and ANY native american joke the Navajo Nation takes as offensive. There are more just Navajos that live in Arizona. You don't see the the other tribes crying foul. And a great deal of Navajos are drunks. So it's not a negative, just true.

Get over it. It's hurts cause there's some truth.

i saw a comment posted on here about the same thing portrayed all over the media..about the Irish. I am a native american, and this comment hit the nail on the head. its 2013, and everybody is too PC. Us natives aren't always the victims because our actions put us in that light. yea some of us are drunks, but most of us aren't. Besides that, it was a joke. I hear all sorts of racist rhetoric from natives as well. As a native american, i am not offended, and who ever got offended, maybe the phrase Drunk hits too close to home. sad but true.
