'Buckwild' Star Shain Gandee

Family Needs Cash to

Cover Funeral Expenses

EXCLUSIVE

Shain Gandee did not get rich during his brief stint as an MTV reality star -- far from it -- so his family is turning to his community to help pay for funeral expenses ... TMZ has learned.

Shain's cousin, Ashley Gandee, is organizing a memorial "mud run" (an off-road trucking event) to ease the financial strain on Shain's family in the wake of the "Buckwild" star's death.

"I know the strain they are going through," Ashley tells us ... adding, "It's hard to provide a proper burial. It's already tough with the loss of family members ... expenses are tough as well."

FYI -- Ashley was with Shain at the opening of her shop Gandee's General Store in Crown City, Ohio on Saturday ... two days before he was found dead.

Ashley tells us the "mud run" event will take place Wednesday night in Proctorville, Ohio -- a town about 50 miles from Charleston, West Virginia where "Buckwild" is filmed.

We're told there will be a $10 charge for each vehicle -- Ashley's store will also be taking donations.

It's unclear how much dough Shain made during his career on the MTV show -- but as we learned from the "Jersey Shore" situation, the stars don't usually see a big pay day until AFTER the show becomes a hit. It's safe to say Shain was probably making a couple thousand dollars at best.

As we previously reported ... Shain was found dead in his Ford Bronco Monday in West Virginia -- along with his uncle and a male friend -- after the vehicle was submerged in mud. Carbon Monoxide poisoning may have been the cause.

I think that with all of the money that MTV made off of these people without paying them hardly anything, the noble gesture here would be to just cover the funeral expenses. What could it cost, maybe $20,000? They should just pay it and give them family some peace.

I don't understand a lot of the stunts they did on the show, like mudding. Mudding just seems like a good way to wreck you vehicle. I think if you are a daredevil, something like this is not unlikely to happen.

I am not against the show. I grew to like the characters and especially Shain. He had a good naturedness about him. I feel sad to hear this news.

I don't think this shows anyone in a bad light, just a real light. There is good and bad. You see the consequences of bad when you watch a show like this. If you are going to take risks, sometimes you lose.

Very sorry to hear this news.

It makes me so mad that people are being mean about his death. He was a person to. Everyone makes mistakes and even though his mistake costed his life, that doesn't mean you can judge him for it. Because for all you know, you might make a mistake that will cost you your life too.

MTV ran a whole telethon to help those who needed money after Hurricaine Sandy. You would think they could just pay for this funeral, since they encouraged this type of behavior on their show and made money off of it. I wonder if they will really have compassion, or if Restore the Shore was just a way to get more ratings from people watching the Jersey Shore cast answer phones.

The Jersey Shore is overbuilt, that is part of the problem. The same people get flooded out year after year. It is time they just restored the dunes and moved inland if possible.

MTV supports that dangerous activity of living on a shore. How about they support people who go mudding also? They benefitted financially from both situations.

BURY YOUR OWN....THERE ARE LOTS OF PEOPLE WHO CANT AFFORD TO BURY THEIR LOVED ONES, BUT THEY DO WITHIUT ASKING FOR HELP. THATS WHAT FAMILIES ARE FOR....MINE ALWAYS CHIP IN WHEN IT COMES TO A FAMILY MEMBER, MOST DONT GO BEGGING THE PUBLIC FOR MONEY. SORRY HES DEAD, BUT HIS FAMILY NOW IS LOOKING FOR MONEY, BECAUSE THEY CANT AFFORD A FUNERAL....ASK THAT PUNK WHO SOLD DRUGS FOR THE MONEY...OR BETTER YET...CHEAPER TO CREMATE!

I've never seen this show but it seems like it would be a decent move for MTV to foot the bill seeing as they exploit hot messes for their own financial gain.

Nothing like the death of a famous person to bring out the venom from the shut-ins who troll the TMZ comment section. If this was someone you loved, I'm sure you'd be much less hateful and ****ty. And as for anyone who thinks he was rich from the show, you're even dumber than the rest of these simpletons. Even if he was, how much money did YOU save at such a young age? Get off your high horses, people.
