The O'Jays are going to WAR with the people behind Crown Royal Whiskey ... claiming the booze company ripped off the band's most famous song for a pathetic commercial that "humiliated" the group.

Two members of the band behind the hit "For Love of Money" (you know the song, 'Money, money, money, money ... MONNNNEYY) ... have filed a lawsuit claiming they never gave permission for the people behind Crown to use their tune in a recent TV spot featuring NBA legend Dr. J.

FYI -- the song was used as a background track ... while a rapper drops some custom rhymes to sell the booze.

But Walter Williams Sr. and Eddie Levert (founding members of the group) ... are PISSED -- claiming the rhyme is "humiliating and demeaning by reducing them to background singers."

They also take a shot at the rapper -- saying he's nothing more than a "poseur with limited ability to carry a tune" ... who performed a "self-aggrandizing childish rap."

Williams and Levert are now asking for more than $1 million in damages.

That second last paragraph pretty well defines rappers, IMO.

"poseur with limited ability to carry a tune" ... who performed a "self-aggrandizing childish rap."

Crown Royal recently announced that they were adding water to their product to make up for lost profits. Yes, they really did say that, look it up! Ppl had a fit and they retracted & apologized. What a crappy company.

I guess when your only claim to fame is 1 mildly successful song that was recorded over 30yrs ago, you get a little possessive. They should just be thankful that someone wanted to use it, take the royalties and zip their traps.

There were no one slicker than the O'Jays back in the day. Great Lead singer, on the money harmonies, choreography, Tuxedos or other matching, tailored clothes - the epitome of class.
.
Now they got some gold toothed clown with his pants half way down his azz singing shyte rhymes behind their classic song - I don't blame them one bit.

Somehow i think that they will be just fine if Crown royal gives them some MONEY. But if they go to court what jury would say they were demeaned by a Crown Royal ad but allow that song to be tied to "The Apprentice"?

You could say that about any rapper and it would be true.

The O'Jays are right; the commercial sucks. If I didn't know they were in it, I wouldn't have even heard them. However, I also know that they granted permission for Crown Royal to use their music.

I love the O'Jay's but come on? That's Big KRIT on that commercial. And he's far from a "poseur with limited ability to carry a tune". He's one of the most talented upcoming rappers today. And how can you go wrong with Dr. Jay?
