Well this is nuts ... a wealthy Connecticut man (who allegedly stocked hundreds of guns in his million-dollar mansion) was arrested after telling police he was building a bomb ... for Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.

It's actually hilarious ... law enforcement sources tell us, 69-year-old Joseph Callahan called police last week, claiming someone had broken into his home.

When police searched the place, we're told they found a terrifying arsenal of guns and explosives, including roughly 100 pounds of ammonium nitrate (the same chemical used in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing). Short story: Callahan called the cops on himself.

Callahan told police he planned to give the bomb to Keith Richards, but had no intention of harming him.

Callahan was taken into custody and placed on a 72-hour psychiatric hold. He has been charged with 112 counts of illegal possession of explosives, reckless endangerment, and manufacture of bombs (which Callahan called a hobby).

But here's the scary part ... his lawyer tells us, Callahan was mentally unstable at the time of his arrest, but has since stabilized and been released from custody on his own recognizance.

It's a miracle! Callahan admitted to police he'd been taking meds, so we can't say if the meds played a role in stabilizing him ... but we do know he's in therapy. How safe do you feel tonight?

A mentally ill person whose hobby is making bombs & building an arsenal is "hilarious?" Maybe to the people living in LaLa Land. Not to normal people.

Only in American the man who has mental problems has a pile of guns and bomb making materials and he is out of jail. Unbelievable, truly unbelievable. Hey NRA what's your take on this. Since he is rich let him buy more guns.

You know why you can't say if the meds had a role in stabilizing him? BECAUSE YOU ARE PAPARAZZI. Kindly stop speculating about people's mental health conditions, because you are not a mental health professional, and you are really bad at it. You sound like a freaking joke--"we can't say." Um. Of COURSE you can't say. Additionally, your constant stigmatization of the mentally ill as jokes to be mocked or dangerous is unconscionable, bullying, dangerous, and wrong.

He does not live in a mansion, it's a normal house with an inflated value as is typical for the area. He is also not a millionaire, just a man with mental issues but lives comfortably. And the only reason this story went national is because of Keith Richards. Thanks TMZ for making it look like CT is full of millionaires, because most of us live paycheck to paycheck.
