Jameis Winston

Signs Cops Covered Up Sexual Assault Allegations

11/14/2013 12:10 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

There's evidence Tallahassee cops tried to sweep the sexual assault investigation targeting Florida State University QB Jameis Winston under the rug to protect the team and its star player ... and ONLY took aggressive steps after TMZ Sports started asking questions.

Sources in the State Attorney's Office tell us they never even knew about the investigation until Tuesday ... JUST ONE DAY AFTER TMZ Sports began making calls to cops about the alleged assault.

Our sources in the State Attorney's Office say ... it was highly unusual cops wouldn't have filled them in about the case until this week.  The sources say cops would have typically notified them when the investigation was completed, and Winston's lawyer reportedly says cops told him it was completed in February.

Now get this ... TMZ Sports started calling police about the case on Monday.  We were told someone would get back to us later that day, but there was radio silence for 2 days ... we made repeated calls Tuesday and Wednesday and no one got back to us until late Wednesday afternoon.

Sources in the State Attorney's Office tell us ... the timing -- getting notified about the case months after it supposedly was closed and just a day after TMZ started calling -- is suspicious.

The State Attorney has now re-activated the case and sent it back to cops for further investigation.

And there's a twist -- guess what would happen if Winston was even CHARGED with felony sexual assault -- under FSU's rules ... he would be AUTOMATICALLY BENCHED ... killing the team's national championship hopes and his Heisman Trophy chances.

Don't strain yourselves too hard while patting yourselves on the back, TMZ. Good grief

this is what happens when TMZ has a slow news week. Lindsey is behaving, Miley is traveling, Chris is in rehab. So this is the level they stoop to. better watch out that the city's trash is being picked up on time or they might be next. really pathetic.

But who tipped off TMZ?

I sense the presence of one Urban Meyer.

Winston was a complete unknown at this time, he was considered a 3rd string quarterback until mid to late summer. This is an absolute BS, opportunistic, possible $ grab by some A-hole.

Hmmm seems like someone at TMZ has it out for FSU. Pathetic

He will fit right in with the NFL , some dumb NFL owner will pay him millions for demonstrating this kind of conduct. He will be highly recruited by the NFL for his talents off the field.

Leave it to the rancid liberal cesspool of human excrement that is TMZ to contrive a smear story about a quarterback whose team had just secured a spot in the national championship game(should they win out the rest of their schedule) and who was personally touted as the Heisman front runner. Your inability to increase your viewer base beyond the driveling, mouth breathing rejects of society should come as no surprise to a publication that distorts facts and celebrates celebrity trash. Jameis Winston is not 5'9-5'11!!!!!

A very good friend of twenty years coaches a brother of a player at FSU. Not going to mention his name. My friend told me about this several months ago and said the coaches paid the girl to keep quiet.

Maybe your crack investigative team at TMZ should have spent a little more time looking in to this before putting a college athlete on blast in national media for something that is an ALLEGATION. Even the initial report is off. Media outlets only care about breaking a story first, irregardless of whether there is truth to the claim or not. You even write your article in a way as to sway readers to take your bull**** reporting as fact. But hey, no skin off your backs right? After all, it isn't your name being dragged through the mud. Unreal.

Why does TMZ always go after African-Americans, is it just a Jewish thing?

TMZ is ridiculous! Okay listen. This IS the real story. Jameis was at a part that this incident happened. Jameis was not/is not a suspect. He was only "involved" in this case due to him being one of the "black males" at the apartment. At the time that this happened (Dec. 2012) the claimant didn't know his name! Hense why there are NO names on the original police report. The police report IS public access. It has been since "redacted" and sent to the State's Attorney because TPD was contacted by TMZ about this and they knew it would be media blasted, just like it is. TPD opted to turn it over to State's Attorney's office so they didn't have to deal with it. There wasn't eniugh evidence to charge ANYone, that is why nobody was arrested. I am absolutely appalled how the media can drag this kid's name through the mud with ZERO evidence and nothing to backup their ridiculous claims!!

I guess the suspect being 5-9 to 5-11 and weighing 240 pounds didn't mean anything to TMZ. The kid is 6-4 and 218. The only thing they had in common was being black. But I guess that's all TMZ needs to make a story.

Another future National Felony League player got caught in what they do best?

it's funny how they conveniently leave out all the miss information between the girls report and her description of her attacker, and how it doesn't match Winston at all....she said her attacker was 5'11" max and Winston is 6'4" is just one of many things that don't match him at all, so before we try and ruin and innocent KIDS career let's do some fact checking
