Russell Brand

South Africa Banned Me!

11/15/2013 12:35 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF
breaking news

Russell Brand won't be tickling the funny bone of South Africans anytime soon ... 'cause the comedian just learned he's not allowed in the country.

Brand tweeted about the ban today saying his people thought things had been worked out with S.A. officials ... but when Russell landed, airport staff said he couldn't stay.

It's unclear why he's not allowed in South Africa ... but the "Get Him to the Greek" star claimed the same thing happened to him in Canada back in '11.

Maybe they had a problem with "African Child"??

I hope the U.S. doesn't let him back in. He is a useless unfunny tool.

I'd say let him in take for a boat ride and throw his ass to the sharks but they'd just throw him back.

He's funny and smart. Don't like his opinions? Piss off and watch, or listen to someone else! He's not someone who implements policies. Just a comedian with an opinion. I'm more worried about you folks who take the time to bash him. Who has time for that?

It must be the drug convictions, even though he's been sober for quite a while. Japan told Paris Hilton to turn around and go back home for the same reason. After a certain time, there are procedures that can get you into such countries as long as you aren't considered dangerous. Lots of paperwork. That's what he meant when he said they thought things had been worked out with the South African authorities. Better luck next time.

Even if felonies are reduced by American courts to misdemeanors (often done with DUIs, for example, and sometimes other crimes), it still might be considered a felony in the other country. This is why Lindsay Lohan couldn't just waltz into Canada after her theft conviction even though the judge had kindly reduced it to a misdemeanor (on top of those pesky DUIs which are felonies in Canada). Loads of paperwork and convincing to be done. The TV movie Luz & Dick was supposed to be done in Canada but it was too much hassle with Lindsay in the cast so they relocated to the Los Angeles area.

He was prolly banned due to his criminal record. We (canada) won't let Eminem pass the boarder either... dumb laws I know but at least we've had universal healthcare since the early 1950's. #justsayin

He wasn't banned. His passport didn't have enough open pages. And that's not a South African rule. That's global travel rule…
