Michael Sam is doing himself a HUGE disservice by getting into bed with Oprah ... so says former NFL QB Shaun King who thinks Sam's reality show will seriously hurt his chances of making the Rams.

As we previously reported, Sam is doing a docu-drama for the OWN Network about his journey to the NFL -- and cameras have been rolling since before the NFL Draft.

Now, King -- who played in the league from 1999 to 2006 -- tells TMZ Sports he personally supports Michael Sam and is proud of the guy ... but believes teams will view the show as a distraction.

"After what happened with Tebow, the last thing an NFL team wants is a media circus. They just want to go about their business and focus on winning."

King says he believes teams may have gotten wind of the show before the draft and it could have been one of the reasons he fell to the 7th round.

"I had him pegged as a 5th round guy. I think the reason he dropped is because teams are afraid [of things like the reality show]."

King added, "I'm happy he got drafted. I support Michael Sam ... but I think the reality show is a mistake."

He just might be setting himself up for a big fall. If he doesn't become a stand-out player, everyone will say, "I told you so". but then, he can play the big victim and say he didn't get a fair chance, and oprah will be right there screaming "bigotry", like she always does.

Getting a reality show just because you're a pole smoker is pretty dumb, anyone can see that

Might as well make all the money he can now, because he'll probably wont even make the team.

the reality show seems like almost an admission he's not going to make the team, or at best be on some team's practice squad, so cash out now when the chance is ripe.

Yes , it's a huge mistake. I'm sure the entire team and management don't like all the attention being put om a newcomer. I'm starting to see why he was passed up by all the other teams in the first 248 picks. He better hope he can play a great game ,or the press as well as the NFL will quickly forget about him.

He needs to focus 100% on football. If he doesn't then he probably won't even make the team. As it is he has to be valuable enough to get a slot on special teams at a minimum. The tv show has to be a distraction.
