Tony Dungy

I Wouldn't Have Drafted Michael Sam

... Because He's Gay

breaking news

Former Super Bowl winning coach Tony Dungy says he wouldn't have drafted Michael Sam because he wouldn't want to deal with the gay factor.

Dungy -- who's currently an analyst for NBC -- made the comments to the Tampa Tribune ... saying, "I wouldn’t have taken him. Not because I don’t believe Michael Sam should have a chance to play, but I wouldn’t want to deal with all of it."

Dungy predicts the fact that Sam is openly gay will be an issue in the NFL -- explaining, "It’s not going to be totally smooth ... things will happen."

Dungy seems to be acknowledging that Sam is talented enough to play in the NFL -- but he would have overlooked that because of his sexual orientation.

Of course, Sam WAS drafted ... and will be fighting for a roster spot on the St. Louis Rams. For more sports stories, check out tmzsports.com!

Good for him, basic common sense, don't do "whatever" if the sh*it your going to get for doing it is more sh*it than it's worth!

The Rams drafted this "Pipe Jammer" as a PR move so just tell it like it is. This guy sucked at the NFL combine.

If this were 50 years ago and white people felt uncomfortable with black people on their team, this man wouldn't even be a coach.

I understand Coach Dungy's position. Sams' presence will present challenges. However, we can't always take the low road because it's easier. Sometimes, we are required to take the high road with all of the bumps and bruises. This is required for continued growth and development.

He would not draft Michael Sam based on is sexaul preference but defended a dirt bag liked Vick.

He will see all that sausage and think he is at a buffet... A lot of jock straps will come up 'missing' and Sam will make his team mates throw up the first time he sees him kiss his boyfriend!!

Totally agree with Tony Dungy. Would be nothing but an unnecessary distraction in the locker room and on the field. Unwanted publicity to have to deal with.

It will attract a lot of unnecessary attention. He's not first string talent but already thought he could tape a reality show without his team's consent. I don't cate about anyone's asexual preference, but the added distraction would put a strain on the team.

Wow! Welcome back to the 1950's. Discrimination of ANY type is morally wrong. Not acceptable so don't try to justify it. You may not agree with the gay lifestyle but you are not entitled to judge and make decisions based on that. He is a human being and he cannot help being born gay, it's beyond his control.

The NFL (and pro sports in general) is FULL of drug addicts, wife beaters, robbers, hell, MURDERS and somehow these guys keep getting drafted to teams.... but he'd pass over a player because of who he sleeps with? Makes sense. What does a personal sex life have to do with how they play the game? You've got guys in pro sports who sleep with every chick they see, but that's okay. They catch VD... that's cool. They knock up random broads and go to court every five days so they can figure out the "18 year payment plan"... but that's cool too... no biggie. But if the guy is sleeping with men... that's where they draw the line.

I don't care what you're feelings are on being gay.. THIS... makes no sense. As a black person, he of all people should know the crap people who are 'different' have to deal with. Why would he put that on someone else?

Can you say, CHICKEN****? Pretty wimpy for a coach.

Any of you complaining bitches ever heard of the FIRST AMMENDENT? Coach Dungy can say what he wants just like all you Gay Freaks can say what you want

He'd make Pro Bowl as a pivot man... DE, not so much. Too small, mediocre against OL rushing, and cover skills lacking.

I see his point. His job as an NFL coach was only to win games and with that means having everyone one on his team focused solely on that goal. With Michael Sam comes an extra media presence that will distract staff and players. He's not discriminating against him he's just saying his presence would hinder his job and he's absolutely right. Michael Sam isn'ta good enough player to have to deal with all that.
