American Idol Wannabe Already Has a Record

1/18/2007 5:49 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Thomas DanielsBefore he wowed Simon, Paula and Randy during last night's "American Idol," Thomas Daniels took his fair share of punishment from real judges over several criminal charges, including drunk driving.

TMZ has unearthed legal documents which reveal that in 2004, Daniels was convicted of DUI in Clackamas, Oregon. The 21-year-old, who was the first wannabe to get the green light from the "AI" crew on last night's show, pled guilty and was sentenced to a one-year alcohol diversion program and a $680 fine. Daniels also attended eight AA meetings and saw a counselor once a week for two months. After the completing his DUI sentence, the incident was wiped from Daniels' record.

TMZ spoke exclusively with Daniels who said, in reference to his DUI, "I was young and dumb and drinking and driving."

In December 2005, Daniels was arrested again; this time for hit and run. He failed to appear in court for the arraignment, so Daniels was rearrested. TMZ could not find the disposition of the hit and run. Daniels called the incident "another young and dumb situation."

When asked if he disclosed his criminal past to "American Idol" producers, Daniels had no comment.

This just in....Thomas Daniels was spotted in a Auto Parts store in Clackamas, Oregon fourteen minutes ago and farted while waiting in line for the cashier.....What the F*** people wake up! American Idol is a singing/talent contest, why would you sh*t on a person, and go as far as to obtain court records and attendance for AA meetings? All the guy is trying to sing. Do you think it will have an effect on his weekly ratings. Will you be feeding us the private lives of the other contestants? what a waste of reporting. What's next? Are you going to tell us the cost of sailboat fuel...has gone up?

To Poster No. 2....He probably is very nice, he seemed to be, but it's unfortunate if he didn't let Idol know before the world got hold of these unfortunate events.

TO WHOM, "MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS REQUIRED!

IN A PERFECT WORLD, WE WOULD CARE! BUT WE ARE EXPLOITING THEIR TALENT, NOT THEIR CRIMINAL PAST! PEOPLE DO MAKE MISTAKES IN THIS LIFE! WHERE IS THE REDEMPTION?

Well, I am glad he did not hurt or kill himself or someone else. He is young and we all make mistakes. He still has a nice voice.

This guy did what was required of him by law to correct his mistakes, and it looks to me like maybe he learned from them. This country is supposed to be about second chances so long as you do fix your life, so leave him alone and see what happens. -Diane

The past is the past and everyone makes mistakes. To hold every contestant accountable a second time for mistakes made in their lives is wrong. We must give everyone chances to make changes and correct situations. I find it hard to believe that people who are judging these contestants as to whether they are "fit" to serve or compete have never made mistakes. When you get arrested, which I have never been but know people who have, they charge you with everything possible and hope you plea bargain so they can at least get some conviction on you. The system is wrong in this way and to not allow people to change their lives is also wrong.

tmz acts like people care, so many people have dui's and so many people have driven drunk several times be it from 1 drink, getting high, taking medicine. just because our (as in those born around 1983) generation did not have the benefit of the previous generation in terms of having Law enforcement slap us on the hand or drive us home or pull us over and pour out our alcohol and tell us to be on our way, does not mean that one with a dui is malem in se. there were barely any dui laws upon the dawn of the 1990's!!!

I have known Tommy for several years. It is sad to see what the media is doing to people who are trying to get ahead. Tommy has worked hard to get on AI.
The charges were cleared so TMZ had no right to bring them to everyones attention. I know if Tommy makes to the final 12 I will be voting for him.
Tommy is strong person and will not let this get him down, his family, friends and community are behind him 100%.
