Cobain Fam: Love's Been Bad Parent 'For Years'

12/17/2009 2:30 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Kurt Cobain's family claims Courtney Love has been an unfit parent for years -- and the plan to take custody of Frances Bean Cobain has been years in the making.

Courtney Love and Frances Bean Cobain

Charles Fradenburg -- Kurt Cobain's uncle -- told TMZ his sister Wendy O'Connor "has been trying to get custody of Frances for quite a few years." As we first reported, a judge appointed Wendy -- who is Kurt's mother -- as one of the two guardians of Frances Bean last week.

Fradenburg also tells us, "Courtney is not fit to take care of Frances, she can barely take care of herself ... Courtney wasn't doing any parenting at all, she was hiring nannies to do all of the work."

Fradenburg said, "This is a wonderful thing for the family."

"They" didn't take her "child". Frances wanted to be with her gm and aunt. "They" didn't take out the restraining order. Frances did.

Anymore questions Courtneytards?

Something serious might have happened beyond the usual ups and downs. There is no way that a judge would order no contact, direct or indirect, with a 17 year old unless the 17 year old was the one who wanted no contact. The judge certainly talked with Frances individually. This is basically a restraining order under another name.

Best guess is that Frances wanted to get away, but didn't ask for emancipation because all she wanted was to live with other family. She wasn't looking for independence, just a way out of a bad situation with her mom.

Better Than You

It may have been Frances who physically requested the restraining order...

... but probably at the persistent brainwashing of her grandparents.

Whatever. The girl will be 18 in less than nine months, so this whole thing is pretty stupid anyway.

Next year she's considered an adult, the damage has already been done.

She's 17, not 7. If she was being treated so bad why didn't they get custody b/f? This makes little sense to me.

This has nothing to do with money. Francis's money has been in trust for years, and neither the Cobain family or Courtney Love has any real control over it. There are executors for that. It seems that Frances prefers to be with her aunt and grandmother, and she is a year away from being an adult, so her feelings should absolutely count.

Whatever mistakes Kurt's mom maid in raising him, she seems to have been a good grandmother to Frances. On the other hand, I hate to see any mother and child torn apart. I hope when the situation calms down, Frances can work on resolving her relationship with her mother. Frances deserves a stable and happy life, and I hope she gets it.

My understanding is that Frances has spent a great deal of time with her mother and grandmother over the years, and at times they have had official custody. She seems very much to prefer living with them than with Courtney Love, and she is seventeen and should have a say in the matter.

I'm sure mistakes have been made on both sides, and this sounds like an unhealthy situation, but if the judge took the step of blocking communication between Courtney and Frances - there is probably very serious stuff going on behind the scenes.

I just wish the young woman the best.

To my understanding, they have had custody of Frances another time in her growing up. Just because she is 17 doesn't mean she doesn't need some stable family in her life. Her father is dead, her mother is insane, and there's no way this beautiful young lady has had a normal upbringing. I think it shows a great deal of maturity that she DIDN'T file for a legal emancipation. I assume she just wants to go somewhere sane and safe, and Casa de Love is definitely not that place.

And the way she totally Alec Baldwined her daughter is disgusting to me. She has every right to file for a restraining order. If this is how she treats her daughter in public, then I can only imagine what goes on behind closed doors.

The cobain's did SO WELL with Kurt Cobain. What a waste he was and what a travesty his life was, and the cobains's want to do the same with Cortney's daughter. WOW, what is wrong with the liberal judges out there.
TMZ has been severely off the job here since I have seen no photos under Frances Cobain's skirt, neither have I seen any scandal photos or stories of her taking drugs, or driving drunk as Al Gore's son did. This HAS to be a MISTAKE, by the liberal judges in lala land.

I am very happy that Love lost her child, she has been a train wreck and incoherent for so long, I am surprised it took this long, now maybe her daughter can have a peaceful and happy life.

Frances is certainly old enough to have a vote on the matter and I trust that the courts acted on her wishes.
