If Mr. Johnny Tyrone Stringfield has a copy right for this song, then he is protected as the creator of the lyrics. He then owns all rights to this song. Mr.Tyler Perry has no right to use this man's music without express promission. Even if Johnny was guilty of stealing this song, he is still within his right to sue; because he has obtained a copy right.
If anyone you knew Johnny Stringfield then you would understand why he is sueing Tyler Perry for this song. Johnny did not write this song. The is an ole' hymn that has been sung for years, I am 54 and I can remember hearing this song sung at revival as a child. Anyone that grew up in the Black church know exactly what I am talking about. I personally know Johnny Stringfield, we are from the same hometown (Burgaw, NC). He has aways been a devious individual or for better terms a crook. Now he is scheming the love of God!

Player-haters, the fact that he used the song, can bring in more sales for the orginal song writer. instead of hater trying to bring a lawsuit. Tyler perry video posted on youtube in 2006 featuring the lyrics "Devil Thought He Had Me" ... 2 years before this guy supposedly published a public domain praise song (200*) we've been singing in the black church for decades...as common as "Mary Had A Little Lamb."
So there it is. Now maybe this is one of the loopholes and new goldrushes. Just start publishing common praise songs that are sung in the church and start collecting royalties, even if other people sang it first... I dunno... but the proof is on the youtube video above.
Listen you dumb ass, that is a prayer in that clip on youtube, those words are not the same as the song. The prayer that TP had in the play says this "the devil thought he had me oh but I run". The song that johnny sings says ' the devil thought he had me but I got away" use facts when you try to prove a point jackass.They loved Johnny's song so they used it cased closed.
