8/17/2010 2:05 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned ... Dr. Frank Ryan -- a prominent Beverly Hills plastic surgeon to the stars, famous for Heidi Montag's extreme makeover, is dead ... killed in a car crash.

Dr. Frank Ryan's Death

According to law enforcement, Dr. Ryan's Jeep went over the side of Pacific Coast Highway yesterday at around 4:30 PM.  The Jeep landed on rocks and lifeguards initially tried to help Ryan, to no avail.

Ryan, who was 50, was trapped in the vehicle and had major head injuries.  The Ventura County Fire Department tried hoisting Ryan using a helicopter, but the attempt was called off. Ryan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Minutes before the crash, Ryan Tweeted, "After 25 years of driving by, I finally hiked to the top of the giant sand dune on the pch west of Malibu.  Much harder than it looks!  Whew!"

Ryan's last Tweet before he died, "Border collie jill surveying the view from atop the sand dune."  Ryan posted the picture below with his Tweet.  Law enforcement tells us the dog was injured but survived.

Some of you people here can be so rude & heartless! Do NOT assume you know what happened! He was parked @ the bottom of the dune he climbed, sent the tweet with the pic, got in his car to head home ... THEN went off the road. Keep in mind to those of you who are being heartless, rude individuals, that karma will come back & bite you in the arse! Have a little respect for the dead, will ya?
You will be missed Dr. Ryan! RIP ...

Unrestrained dog in his vehicle. Most likely his dog killed him. Stupid dog owners. At least he didn't kill any innocents.

He was texting. His last twitter post time matches the time he ran off the road.

@you are wrong and I am right

Try stuffing some Immodium in your ears to control your thought diarhhea before you spew it out here where others have to wade through your stench.

Also try reading the article all the way through before posting such lame questions:
Did the jeep survive? No, it was totaled
Is the dog okay? Injured but survived
Tweeting while driving? Last tweet was a pic of the dog on top of the sand dune, so not even in the car.
The rescuers "ripped him in half"? No, they tried to get him out of the wreck but he already had major head injuries & died.
Mel Gibson wrecking his car is to blame? Both accidents happened miles apart (Malibu Canyon Road vs. PCH)

Then you brag about drinking & tweeting while driving? ICK!

This is so sad. I am so sorry to his family that this happend. It is so strange to read some of his last words it seems he was only trying to relax and spend time with his dog. Those roads are scary we went to California in late July and drove hundreds of miles sight seeing. Those cliffs are deadly and I don't know how there arent more wrecks more often. So sad!! :( I hope his doggie recovers...

wow some cruel people here..in the end he was someone's son, uncle, family member, friend..who cares if his clients wanted to look like freaks, they paid him. The article states the dog was hurt but survived...isn't that enough.

Sad.. He actually seemed like a nice guy whenever I saw him on Dr. 90210. I really hope his family doesn't read these posts.

As for people bashing him for being a plastic surgeon: He was just providing a service that people wanted, and he did it better than most. If good doctors like him didn't do it, some unlicensed hack in another country would have done it.

So he gets in his car after the hike and tweets. THEN he starts driving.
You folks doing the math, aren't doing all of the math. He was out hiking, returned to his car - an opportunity to tweet before driving. Stop the idiotic comments and read the article before filling
up the comment board with dumb questions about the dog.
