Leo DiCaprio

Shells Out Cash for

Exotic New Pet

9/15/2010 9:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Leonardo DiCaprio just made a long-term commitment -- but sorry Bar, we're talking about a new pet tortoise he bought ... that's expected to live for another 70 years!

0914_leo_tmz_video

Sources close to the actor tell TMZ, Leo picked up the 10-year-old Sulcata tortoise at the North American Reptile Breeders Conference and Trade Show in Anaheim, CA over the weekend -- which he attended with fellow "Inception" star Lukas Haas -- and get this ... the animal can live to be 80 years old!

According to sources, Leo called a California pet store that specializes in rare reptiles and requested the tortoise one day before he picked it up. We're told the tortoise ran Leo a cool $400.

We're told Leo asked for the biggest tortoise they had -- a 38-pounder -- but according to experts, Sulcatas can grow to weigh 200 pounds.

Good thing he can afford 70 years worth of turtle food.

I'm really surprised he went to a breeder and didn't adopt an animal instead. Otherwise, this isn't very interesting news.

um, Leo D is hardly a D-lister. Do you watch movies at all? And since when does buying a pet mean you have too much time on your hands? maybe you have too much time on your hands to be typing up nonsense

Good for him. I had 3 Slider Turtles growing up and they were awesome. While they certainly are nowhere near the size of what Leo just acquired, I'm still happy for him. Hope he has the best of luck with it, and hopefully that batsh*t crazy Facebook stalker of his doesn't try to kidnap it out of jealousy or anything.

Sure people could adopt babies instead of their own, or dogs or whatever. And sure it can live for 80 years, I assume he did research seeing how he ordered it. He could just get 8 dogs, over a lifetime, and the dogs would cost more to house and maintain! I have a tortoise and he is house trained to the kitchen, great lil fella. Peta can go suck ****

I can see a dog, I can see a cat, I can see fish even...... but a turtle? WHAT are you getting out of that? Petting skills? Teaching him a trick? Sleeping with you? Protecting your home? Taking it for a walk? What is the appeal here?

I don't get it Leo.

I thought you had more smarts than that. And.......he has ZERO time on his hands to be around any animals let alone a girlfriend. So, this turtle will live out its 80!!!!! years in a enclosed area.

Great idea, not too cruel or anything. Like birds, why do people have birds in a cage? Talk about the ultimate in cruel. THEY FLY, hello.

First, the information is not accurate. Mr. DiCaprio did NOT pre-order any animal from us. That isn't the main point, though.

This video and information was provided to TMZ by a friend. By no means do we condone this. We feel absolutely horrible. We work with Celebrities and other public figures often and respect their need for confidentiality in the highest regard.

To Mr. DiCaprio...Please accept our sincere apology for this invasion of your privacy.

#23. You've never heard about training turtles? One of the smartest animals out there! You can teach them to fetch. It takes them a few hours to cross your backyard and bring the stick back, but gosh darn it, they bring the stick back! They can shake paws, and I know someone that has almost taught his turtle to roll over. Getting it on it's back is easy enough, it's completing the roll they're having issues with.

Turtles are also excellent guard animals. As long as you speak to them in German (not sure why German, that's just how turtle minds work) they will be one of the most effective anti-theft measures you could own. I mean, you throw one of these bad boys and clock an intruder in the head, and he is done. Game over. And the turtle will just roll over (with some help) and keep on trucking. If you're lucky, after knocking the intruder out cold, the turtle will bite his nose off too. It's awesome.

That's it, I'm getting a turtle. I'm naming it Spot.
