The Quaids' Arrest Could Mean Death for Doggie

10/26/2010 9:45 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

There was a third Quaid in the car when Evi and Randy were arrested in Canada last week ... their beloved pooch Doji ... and TMZ has learned he could pay for his master's sins ... with his life.

Quaids arrested.

While Evi and Randy are still "in detention" after being nabbed on an active arrest warrant ... we've learned Doji has been placed in an animal shelter in Vancouver for the time being.

But Doji's days could be numbered -- because according to Vancouver law, any dog that has been impounded for more than 72 hours becomes city property ... and the pound keeper is then given the authority to "destroy, or sell by auction or private sale, an impounded dog."

We spoke to someone at Animal Control in Vancouver who told us they "make every effort to not put the dogs to sleep" ... and generally try to find the animals a home through adoption.

Still, look at this face (the one on the left) ... someone better act fast.

WTF man, what a stupid ass law, after 72 hours the dog is no longer the owners? If you're locked up what are you supposed to do, if you have no family or friends to help you retrieve your dog? Not the dog's fault. Hey Canada, WAKE THE F UP.

Hey,,, all you Canadians crying about how humane your country is; answer this.

What happens if a person is put in jail and their dog or bird or whatever pet is taken and adopted by someone and then the person in jail is found to be innocent and released... do they get their pet back or get compensated???

Three days and my Golden Macaw is lost forever??? it is easily worth $60...00 and their would be a line at the pound to get their hands on it.

That law sucks!!!!!

I'm a Vancouverite and former volunteer at the City shelter..
it is a NO KILL facility.. period

this shelter routinely gets dogs from other facillites that have trouble adopting dogs out for just that very reason. In fact, the dog is safer here than California - where dogs are given 90 days before being killed.

The dog will be fine - not so sure about the owners though..

I AM IN NJ.......AND WOULD ADOPT THE DOG IF I COUULD....IF ANYONE FORM CANADA DOG SERIVCES CAN READ THIS.....EMAIL ME...AND I WILL TAKE THE DOG...KILLING PEOPLE PETS SHOUULD BE A SIN........BESIDES ILLEGAL. THERE IS NO REASON THEY SHOULD KILL A DOG IF THEY KNOW WHO OWNS IT.....THEY SHOULD TAKE CARE OF IT AND THEN SEND THE ACTOR A BILL LATER...TO GET THE DOG BACK.
IF THEY KILL THE DOG..PETA SHOULD PAY THEM A VISIT.

Happy Endings Animal Rescue in Nashville, TN has contacted the Vancouver, Animal Control and offered our assistance to save Doji (the Quaids Dog) but a representative of their Facility has said that they are working on a possible adoption as we speak. There have been many requests to help Doji and he will be saved one way or another. If the adoption doesn't go through Doji will be placed in foster care at someone's home until he does get adopted. www.happyendingsanimalrescue.org

All Vancouver shelters are non kill, unlike almost all of the shelters in the States, get your facts straight before you publish stuff you know NOTHING about

Thank you for bringing this story out. Someone needs to rescue that doggie from those nutbags! Clearly, those 2 are either mentally disturbed or, more likely, on drugs. Please someone save that doggie!

Good grief. That is the law, not what happens. Canada has a much higher spay and neuter rate than the US, and we don't have the "high kill" shelters the States does. The dog will be FINE.

Coming from a Vancouverite, he will not be destroyed. The SPCA will likely step in, and they have a no-kill policy unless he is aggressive. Doesn't look very agressive to me :)
