We are all very sorry. He probably had unproper treatment though.
Many people in the tropics have dengue fever more than once in their lives. Death caused by dengue is not usual when it is the first time the person got it, UNLESS the patient is treated with unproper medicines, such as aspirine (aspirine is lethal for a dengue patient, for example), OR he is in a very fragile physical condition (which we believe was not the case for such astonishing sportsman).
It is really too bad that Andy didn't have access to an expert in Tropical Diseases physician.

Andy is now surfing with the angels. May his family and friends mourn his lost in peace and serenity.

TO THE FEW HATERS ON HERE... Plan a trip to the North Shore. Rent a surfboard or a sponge. Be a kook and immediately drop in on one of the locals so you can have a face-to-face consultation with the "Wolf Pak"

I'm in complete shock. One of my lifelong dreams was to someday meet Andy and Bruce. One of the mags recently printed a picture of Andy in a bar and he wasn't looking sober.

It's impossible to get the 411 on people in the 808 when you don't live there. Based on what little I do know as a fan... In the surfing community Andy was not well-liked. He had anger issues and was very competitive. A lot of surfers didn't like him simply out of jealousy that he got to grow up in Hawaii. Guys were also jealous over Andy's lovely wife, Lyndie, whom he married a few years ago.

He went into rehab early last year (?) and never specifically commented on what it was for. Surfline did an odd interview with him where he tried to talk about it but didn't. A slew of negative article comments had to be removed from the website. It was clear though that he had become depressed and lost his passion for the sport.

He seemed to be doing okay when he began recently began competing again. But that eerie photograph in the magazine had me worrying and now the news of his passing. A fever? Plenty of surfers travel to remote locations all over the world every year... I seriously pray that's all it was. I'm absolutely devastated by this and in shock so forgive me if there's been anything offensive in this post.

My condolences to Andy's parents, Lyndie, Bruce, Sunny, Kai, Parko, and everyone else who knew and loved him. My heart goes out to you all.

Does he have a place at FindAGrave.com yet? It's a beautiful memorial site for everyone and rude comments are not tolerated there.

Heartbreaking. And his wife is 7 months pregnant. His son will never know his father. How tragic. I dont understand how some of you can joke about such an unfortunate situation.

RIP Thoughts go out to his family and friends but I have to say when you are that ill you go to the hospital not a hotel room, another avoidable tragedy.

"I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. We have the biggest Dengue problem in the world, all summer..."

Agreed Daniel. Brazilians need to quit exposing the other surfers on tour and everyone else to dengue. Reflects their irresponsibility in and out of the water.
