Bernie Madoff's Son Found Dead of Apparent Suicide

12/11/2010 11:20 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Mark Madoff -- son of incarcerated former stock broker Bernie Madoff -- was found dead in his apartment in Manhattan early Saturday morning of an apparent suicide.

Mark Madoff Death -- Bernie Madoff Son
Madoff was found hanging in his SoHo apartment by his father-in-law. His 2-year-old child was also in the apartment at the time.

Mark Madoff, 46, was investigated -- along with his brother Andrew -- as part of his father's Ponzi scheme, but never faced any criminal charges.

An attorney for Mark Madoff released a statement saying, "This is a terrible and unnecessary tragedy. Mark was an innocent victim of his father's monstrous crime who succumbed to two years of unrelenting pressure from false accusations and innuendo."

Today marks the two-year anniversary of Bernie Madoff's arrest.

Do all of you know something I don't about Mark Madoff's involvement in his father's wrong-doing? I'm not saying he wasn't involved - I'm saying I have no idea. I'm not privy to my father's business dealings, so it's not impossible to conceive that Mark was unaware as well. According to the NY Post, he's endured years of torment and accusations as a result of Bernie's behavior - if he was truly innocent, one can imagine the toll that would take. That said, I agree he should've gone somewhere else to kill himself and not done it anywhere near the vicinity of his child. Just shows you what a desperate mental state he was in.

It wasn't too many years that he could have felt he was tormented, his father was just arrested two years ago yesterday. Mark was considered the outgoing front man for his Dad's business and in 2006 Mark drew a salary of $29million with a bonus of $4.5 million, you really think he knew nothing about the fraud?

Someone asked didn't the sons turn in the Dad, yes, they did, but who is to say that the Dad didn't have them do that to try to draw suspicion away from the sons. There is no way though that they could not have known what was going on.

I still say he did this to insulate his wife and child from losing the money. No conviction against him or sentence so the government now can't touch her inheritance despite it being dirty money. Think Ken Lay and Enron.

Money does not solve all problems. It's sad that anyone reaches the point where the only solution they see is suicide, that they do not have the internal reserves, or faith, to know there is light at the end of the dark tunnel they are in. I believe it takes an incredible amount of emotional pain to have been robbed of all hope, all redemption.

It's not something to rejoice about. It's just plain sad.

RE: "This is a terrible and unnecessary tragedy. Mark was an innocent victim of his father's monstrous crime who suc***bed to two years of unrelenting pressure from false accusations and innuendo"

Mark Madoff worked as a broker in his father's firm. He was NOT innocent, and in fact benefited tremendously from the ponzi scheme.

wow, this is very sad. I don't think Mark and Andy knew about their dad. They ran Primex Trading which employed a good amount of people and they ALL made money. I worked with Andy on a business deal back in 2001/02- he (to me) seemed like a stand-up guy. I only met Mark once. Sad day his children are not only going to have to deal with the fact that "grandpa" is one of the biggest s***bags ever now they have to live with the fact that their father took his own life.

Yeah, sure Madoff's son committed suicide . . . as if the Russian mafia who lost tens of millions in Madoff investment company took their losses as an accounting write-off, just went away, and no more family "suicides" and "accidents" will never happen again. (When Madoff tells the Russians where he hid the loot & they recover it - then the Madoff family's "accidents" and/or "suicides" will stop. If not, while Bernie sits & watches in jail, his family tree will be completely pruned away.)

Maybe the hit man told mark, " I wont kill the Kid if YOU hang yourself " ILL let the kid live so do it now and he hung himself...I do not believe he would have done this on his own with the baby in the home..

Post 59 and 60 by henry hill should be taken down as inappropriate. That said, Jesus celebrated Hanukkah and Passover all of his life with his fellow Jews. Who hates Him?

I am so shocked that some people still think that the sons (nor the wife) didn't know what Bernie was up to? Anyone on Wall Street knows 15% is not sustainable every year, so something was up, especially traders like the sons were. They could not be pulling trades and one family member was a Compliance Officer, who verifies the controls of the financial institution, puhhhleeez. They only decided to turn Bernie in because the gauntlet was coming down and this way Bernie took the entire blame. Even fixing/printing all those statements to the investors, who was doing that? And it wasn't Bernie. The SEC might not have the proof they need, so others weren't prosecuted but that doesn't mean they are all innocent. He was probably guilt ridden to be a part of this horrid scam....But it is still a sad event...The only innocents are the grandkids and they will be rich with their hidden offshore assets.

One of two scenarios- (1) Mark and Andrew knew everything, and criminally assisted in the Ponzi scheme. Bernie made a deal with law enforcement, take me and leave my family alone. Or (2) Mark and Andrew were kept in the dark, to protect them, and to feed Bernie's massive ego. Mark and Andrew haven't been charged with anything criminally, as other employees have, such as Crupi and Bongiorno. The sons not being charged, 1 or 2?

As horrible as Madoff's crimes were, his investors have to shoulder a portion of the blame. Half of the investors were "net winners". Always earning 10% when no one else is! That's greed too!
