Bernie Madoff's Son Found Dead of Apparent Suicide

12/11/2010 11:20 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Mark Madoff -- son of incarcerated former stock broker Bernie Madoff -- was found dead in his apartment in Manhattan early Saturday morning of an apparent suicide.

Mark Madoff Death -- Bernie Madoff Son
Madoff was found hanging in his SoHo apartment by his father-in-law. His 2-year-old child was also in the apartment at the time.

Mark Madoff, 46, was investigated -- along with his brother Andrew -- as part of his father's Ponzi scheme, but never faced any criminal charges.

An attorney for Mark Madoff released a statement saying, "This is a terrible and unnecessary tragedy. Mark was an innocent victim of his father's monstrous crime who succumbed to two years of unrelenting pressure from false accusations and innuendo."

Today marks the two-year anniversary of Bernie Madoff's arrest.

You guys are a*holes! This man was innocent. After his dad confessed to them about Mark and his brother, the brothers turned him in. They turned his own father him. Would they have done that if they were guilty? I doubt it. But even though they did the honorable thing by turning their dad in, they still have to put up with all this hate and speculation that they did not deserve. Yes, they lived lavishly, but wouldn't you as well if your dad had a successful mutual fund? He didn't know it was a Ponzi scheme. Give him a break! May he rest in peace and I'm sure Bernie is going through hell right now knowing that he caused the death of his son. They all need God in their lives right now.

I think it's pretty obvious that he was murdered. I just don't believe he would have killed himself with his young child present. Those type of people kill the child first.

What I think happened was he was killed and the baby was later discovered. The murderer found Mark's BlackBerry and sent his wife the evasive text or email (whatever it was). My BlackBerry isn't password protected. Anyone can pick up my BlackBerry and send an email from me. Anyone.

If he really was going to kill himself he probably would have made sure his child was safe and written something just a little bit longer to his family. Don't you think?

With Bernard Madoff sitting in jail, his son now deceased, his grandson a waiting basket case on the make, and other members of his family tainted and effectively tossed out of the society that they all once thought they embodied and craved can one really begin to imagine the rancid thoughts that must be vehemently going through Bernard Madoff’s mind as he too sits down today and digests the latest consequences of his actions. Not even the ancient Greeks or Shakespeare could have imagined a more diabolical theatrical script…

Lord Have Mercy on us all! We had a small time Ponzi schemer & wife do us in and commit suicide because our friends were bringing him to justice, but it was so tragic for his children. And the waste of a life that could've chosen to use his talents honestly! We have forgiven and moved on,but it was a very tough, sad time. I can't imagine all the grief BM caused, but to rejoice over his son's death! Yikes! What have We come to?

Sad, I dont think his sons were aware of how the father was illegally obtaining their money at first... The sons were the one who tipped off the authorities... Probably the guilt of turning his father in, and al the shame associated with the crime, was more than this guy could handle.

When Mark Madoff is laid to rest, after committing suicide in New York on Saturday, his father Bernard may still be in his cell in North Carolina. According to the rules at the medium-security Butner Federal Correctional Institution, Bernard Madoff would not be allowed a supervised furlough to attend his son's funeral, because he has more than two years pending on his term. (Madoff is serving a 150-year sentence.) "Furloughs are a privilege, not a right, and are only granted when clearly in the public interest," the prison's Inmate Handbook says. One federal prison consultant explained that even though white-collar criminals are often granted emergency furloughs, Madoff's case stood apart. "I would question whether they'd grant him a furlough because of heightened publicity," the consultant said. "He could be a target. He could be shot

If Bernie hadn't covered for his coconspirators and hadn't taken the rap all on himself, his son would be alive today. Bernie has his own son's blood on his hands.

He could have waited until his two year child was in the custody of his mother or any other responsible adult. A selfish father, raised a selfish son....and so it goes. RIP.

The suicide does seem strange. On the anniversary of the sentence with the two sons turning them in. Yes, family members do not always know what other members are up ( example, serial rapists or killers). However, the family does suffer guilt by association. When one is thinking of suicide they think of the children, i.e. kids at school or sending them away when considering the dirty deed. Why a dig leash as well? the seem very flimsy. Men usually shoot themselves and women overdose or slit their wrists. More than likely a veiled message to daddy of some sorts. As for BM being solo in his dirty deeds I don't believe that, had to have been many dirty powerful hands involved as well. But one person usually always takes the fall and keeps their mouth shut about it. Just think about how the whole Enron thing went down. A VP does a staged suicide, two people get actual jail time & Ken Lay does mysteriously right before testifying. Cremated and no one saw the body.
Timing is everything and this suicide seems very convenient and suspicious. Maybe the son was doing some investigating of his own. Just because dad was guilty does not mean the sons were.
