'American Idol' -- The Cowboy Deception

2/3/2011 11:20 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

John Wayne is not who he appears to be ... at least, he's not the innocent, never-left-the-ranch, amateur singer he was made out to be on last night's "American Idol."

Turns out, 23-year-old John Wayne Schulz has a pretty impressive past in the music world -- a past "Idol" producers conveniently neglected to mention when they painted him as an "aww shucks" wannabe who finally stumbled off the family ranch for the first time in his life to try out for the show.

JW not only released an album by the time he was 14 years old -- one of his songs was considered for 7 Grammy nominations!!!!

The CEO of John Wayne's old record label tells John only recorded that one album -- explaining, "He's of Mormon faith, and he had to go on his church mission. He was gone for two years, and we just weren't able to reconnect once he returned."

020311_american_idol_video_2Apparently, it's easier to connect with the folks over at "A.I."

these comments are just unbelievable about john wayne, i've known him since he was nine years old. his character and integrity is that which heros are made from. our american youth could use a young man such as he as a person to look up to & emulate. fyi, john competes in local rodeo, rides his own horse and works cattle, college student, polite to all, he is a true cowboy.

I love everything about this guy except for the Mormon thing =[ They believe they are Christians but they aren't quite. Don't get me wrong they are great and amazing people. But calling them Christians isn't right since they believe in many things that aren't even in the Bible and that Christians don't believe. They believe there are 3 levels of heaven, Jesus and Satan are spirit brothers, God was married and he had a father, they believe in celestial marriage, they believe they can become a god, and so on.

For some people it may not matter but I personally look for the WHOLE package when wanting someone to win American Idol. In the whole package I personally include religion since I am a fairly religious person. And if I can't find that whole package I don't route for anyone =[

Mormons are not Christians but no doubt they might consider themselves as Christians due to the similarities of both beliefs. However, Christian belief is based of the Holy Bible as the sole source of divine word. Mormons also follow the Book of Mormon which is considered heretical by the Christian faith. Therefore, Mormons cannot be considered Christian...

Agree that Mormons are not Christians. They think they are Christians but their so-called Christian beliefs are considered heretical so by definition the religion is a cult. They refer to themselves as Latter Day Saints instead. In order for them to be a truly Christian religion, they should believe in the Holy Trinity. Christian faith do not recognize Joseph Smith (founder of Mormonism) as a prophet. Mormons are not even part of the Christian E***enical Council.
