MJ Family Offended by 'A.I.' Pepsi Moment

3/31/2011 3:40 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

UPDATE: Idol contestant James Durbin just tweeted, "For anyone talkin..I said pepsi NOT MJ! I have no disrespect for Michael. I grew up singing his art. I guess youll take it how you want it..." and then followed that up with, "Talkin about MJs passing is too soon. Making a reference to an incident 25 years ago..not too soon. The stab was at pepsi people."

Michael Jackson
's family is offended by a comment made on "American Idol" last night by a contestant, who made light of MJ's devastating injury that triggered years of drug abuse.

Pepsi Moments
If you saw the show, James Durbin told Ryan Seacrest after his performance, "I have a lot of hairspray in my hair to keep it from jumping around -- so much so, the one thing I was worried about was having a 'Pepsi moment.'"

The "Pepsi moment" is a reference to the 1984 incident where Michael Jackson's hair caught on fire during the filming of a Pepsi commercial, severely burning his scalp -- an injury that triggered an addiction to prescription drugs that may have ultimately taken his life.

A Jackson family rep tells TMZ, "We were shocked to see this. It's nothing to make light of and everybody should be focusing on who was responsible for Michael's death."

The rep says Joe was particularly upset that producers didn't take the remark out of the West Coast feed.

I bet pappa Joe is just biting at the bit now... another "frivalous" lawsuit to file. This poor excuse of a father will never understand he just has to go out and get a job like the rest of the world. I think if anyone is to blame for MJ's drugs (including MJ himself) it's this idiot of a "father". Dudes a joke and always has been. All the Jacksons excluding Janet, are just talentless fame whores. MJ's dead...let it go cuz he ain't coming back. Where's dd??? ready for you to slam me now cuz my opinion isn't the same as yours....LMFAO at ya!!!

The Pepsi comment is not a slam on Michael, it is stating a fact that Michael's hair caught on fire while making that commercial. If the Jackson family is offended by a remark made referencing the incident then they are ridiculous. I am sure that James meant no harm, the Jacksons are nothing without Michael and Janet and Janet doesn't seem to be around them much either. They need to fade away with grace!!

Getting upset over this "pepsi moment" is just ridiculous. Get in the real world where there are plenty of things of greater importance to get upset over !

I am Spartacus

The Jackson family needs to shut up. "Everyone should be focusing on who is responsible for Michael's death." How about the fact that Michael is partly responsible for his own death. If he wasn't addicted to propofol then he would have never died. Whether Murray was negligent or not Michael wanted propofol so he is at least partially responsible for his own death.

And no we shouldn't be focusing on who is responsible for his death, YOU should be focusing on that, its not my job nor do i really care.

So someone on AI said something related to MJ in a negative way, cry me a river. I'm starting to really get sick of this family.

There Goes My Show

F..all of the Jackson's - I wish each of them would go up in flames just like MJ did in that Pepsi commercial. These "people" are a nation embarassment. Let them all rot in hell with their son, brother and lover.

I just think it was a random comment, with him making a comment and an association that we all could relate to. For goodness sakes, he was just saying he was worried about having a moment when things went wrong with the pyrotechnics. He was certainly NOT making a jab at Michael Jackson.

He was not trying to be disrespectful! It was an honest comment and concern!!!!

So did the Pepsi moment cause MJ to jerk off to little boys and want to molest them?

You are a bunch of idiots obsessed about MJ's sexuality. MJ never confessed to molesting kids and the FBI never found one proof that he had sexually molested kids yet you people love to lie about him and say he was a pedophile and I know why you are doing this. Because you yourselves are pedophiles and you want MJ the greatest entertainer of all times to belong to your sick little clan of child molesters. Did you know that NAAMBLA (a secret society of pedophiles) was stalking MJ for years begging him to represent them in exhange that the media would stop calling him a freak? That is because the CEOS of most tabloid magazines were pedophiles themselves and they pressed the story that MJ and Jordan Chandler were lovers in 1993 so the public would come to believe that pedophilia was fun and exciting. MJ never said pedophilia was right. He always said that he would never hurt a child and that he would rather kill himself. Chilean reporter Victor Gutierrez recieved the publishing and financial supports of NAAMBLA when he wrote that kiddie porn book about Jordan Chandler's diary in 1997. Victor even thanked NAAMBLA in his book and also Evan Chandler the father of Jordan who falsely accused MJ of molesting his son. Richard Gardner the psychiatrist who interviewed Jordan Chandler he was a pedophile who wrote book about pedophilia and he said in it that everybody got a little pedophilia in them.

It's been almost 2 years since Michael died, and with all do respect....move on! The world doesn't revolve around Michael's family. Geese!

I find it hard to believe anyone would be truly offended by that comment. This sounds more like a lame attempt to get press on a non-issue.

James did not maliciously say anything as a reference to MJ. You can hear the pause before he says, "Pepsi moment". He realized a little too late what it was going to sound like, so I think he was just trying to think on the fly. And unfortunately, it came off like an intentional jab at MJ. Although I really don't think James meant anything by it.

I really think they are blowing this way out of proportion. And come on, this family has been sucking MJ dry for the last couple of decades anyway and the only thing they are really worried about is where they are going to get more money now that he's gone. Give me a break. 2 brothers who slept with, married and had kids with THE SAME WOMAN, also they are thousands of $'s behind in child support, have no legitimate income (and most never was mostly MJ) and exploited MJ far more than anyone else. This family is disgusting IMO and are clearly not deserving of any credibility any longer. James was speaking about something he had every right to be concerned and harispray. Duh. Did he mention MJ's name? His pain addiction? His death? No. Besides JOE has said more awful comments imemdiately following MJ's death that was way worse than this. The Jackson Family seems to think that they are special or something. Newsflash: NONE of you are. It was only MJ that was special and only when he sang. Now that he's gone, you all need to move on and get out of the public eye. No one wants you in it.
