Kurt Cobain Shrine -- Set in Stone

4/5/2011 4:55 PM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain has yet another way to be immortalized -- TMZ has learned, a 13-foot statue of a guitar was erected today ... in honor of the 17th anniversary of his death.

The statue will be unveiled this afternoon in Cobain's hometown of Aberdeen, WA.  We're told his grandfather is expected to attend, as well as former band members from Nirvana.

TMZ spoke with the statue's artist -- Lora Malakoff -- who tells us, the guitar will rest near the infamous Young Street Bridge, which the musician often sought refuge under to write lyrics.

A moment of silence please.

Hank Hill

Are all of you people brain dead? This article is a fine example of why he's dead. He HATED being famous. He never liked it and never liked the fake people he had to tolerate. And for people to chastise him for doing what he did is ridiculous. If you were the epitome of what you despised in life, wouldn't want to escape it as well? Kurt was a great musician (not guitarist) , the LAST rockstar and someone who left more impact by have the testicular fortitude to stand up for what he believed in than any of his naysayers if they worked towards it for the rest of their lives.
